HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Sir Neville Marriner & The Academy Of St. Martin-in-the-Fields

front-small-boxsetLife President of the Academy, Sir Neville Marriner began his career as a violinist, playing first in a string quartet and trio, then in the London Symphony Orchestra. It was during this period that he founded the Academy, with the aim of forming a top-class chamber ensemble from London’s finest players. Beginning as a group of friends who gathered to rehearse in Sir Neville’s front room, the Academy gave its first performance in its namesake church in 1958.

NEW FILES AT FF!

From the Decca website:

In the 1960s Decca pioneered the use of a multi 10-channel console mixer which created recordings with an unprecedented sense of spatial realism and movement – Phase 4 Stereo. Following in the footsteps of Decca’s highly-successful label heritage sets (The Decca Sound, Mercury Living Presence), this generous selection of the very best of Phase 4 promises to amaze a new generation of fans.

Two of the titles included in the set are on the TAS List – the Holy Grail of vinyl fidelity. This is a list of recordings recommended by The Absolute Sound magazine under the direction of Harry Pearson. Those two titles are The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann and Miklós Rózsa: Music From Ben Hur.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Supraphon) Antonin Dvorak – Rusalka (Neumann)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this stunning beauty
I gather that this work is revered in Czeck republic. Dvorak’s early attempts at opera were poor, as he felt constrained to produce rather Wagnerian works, which ultimately came to be silly. When he returned to his folky inclinations, and Symphonic sensibilities, this was the result. Gabriela Benackova as Rusalka is in splendid voice here and Vera Soukupova sounds delightfully Slavonic as Jezibaba, the Witch. The music is amazing, even the libretto is moving…and the “Moon” aria by Rusalka (track A5) is among the most beautiful arias in operatics.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Supraphon) Antonin Dvorak – Violin Concerto/Romance For Violin (Suk)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Jean-Luc for this rare gem
The painful new of Suk’s death in 2011 made me rethink about this cruel statement; with his absence has dissapeared the last of the great exponents of the giants of the violin of the Great Middle Europe tradition. This school persisted on the fact to acquire personal expression, character and then the technique. That was the secret we may distinguish Heifetz sound, Stern sound, Nevue sound, Milstein sound, Rabin or Menuhin sounds. And Joseph Suk also belonged to this old school. This version of Dvorak violin concerto still remains among the supreme and until this date – unsurpassed performance – along the musical literature.
In memory of this legendary artist.

Super Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Foné) Il Cremonese Antonio Stradivari (Salvatore Accardo)

front-small-boxsetPlease welcome another  audiophile super-label: Fonè
I have read so much about the Italian super-label Fonè, so I thought, is time to hear the records, that so many HiFi lovers would never sell or give away. But I never expected it would be this hard to get the pearls that Signor Giulio Cesare Ricci (called Signoricci by the fans) produces, 100% analogue and very limited to 496 copies. Don’t ask me, why the hell 496 and not 500 😀  Finally I had luck and could get my hands on three of these black gold nuggets and….WOW ! My expectations weren’t disappointed.
Concerning this recording, I seldom heard the Stradivari as if it was played in my livingroom just for me. You can hear the violin breathing…
Audiophile factor: very high!

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Turnabout) Antonin Dvorak – Slavonic Dances for Piano (Brendel/Klien)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Trottar for this rarity
Early in his career, Alfred Brendel made a number of recordings for the Vox label, which includes these sets of the Dvorak “Slavonic Dances” in their original piano four-hands versions, where Brendel and Walter Klien do the honors. The recordings are from 1959, so that we have both the young Brendel and the young Walter Klien captured in sound early on.
All the performances are pretty straightforward, without fuss or muss. One nice feature about hearing the piano four-hands version is how much more clearly the Czech ‘sousedska’ dance form is related to the Austrian ‘Laendler’ when hearing the piano four-hand version, compared to the orchestral versions, at least IMHO. Brendel and Walter Klien do bring a light touch when needed, but when the music calls for what sounds like a bash-fest, particularly in the energetic moments, that’s kind of what you get.
