HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Philips) Antonio Vivaldi – The 4 Seasons (Musici/Michelucci)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Mats for this evergreen
I find Roberto Michelucci’s playing to be just fine, with plenty of expressiveness, although somewhat more stolid rythmically. Besides, I sometimes enjoy hearing the pieces played with a little less passion and a little more transparency, and this one (despite being older than the Carmirelli version) comes closer to capturing the lean style that modern-instruments versions began to adapt following the success of “original instruments” versions. This undescores that I Musici was ahead of its time in many respects by championing the small-ensemble approach to the Baroque and Early Classical (e.g., Mozart) repertoires.

I’m still alive!!!!! I managed, however, to complete the rip before the problems and could now complete it (cleaning, pics, rars etc…) for publishing.

Thank you very much Jean-Luc for this jewel
As great as the Four Seasons is, the impression one gets sometimes that it is Vivaldi’s only masterpiece is terribly wrong. The concertos from La Cetra are every bit as fine, complex, tuneful, and captivating. These performances by the Academy are superb, with warm analogue sound. The violin solos are particularly beautiful. The best version of this set of Vivaldi concertos. Iona Brown surpasses almost everyone else when she plays baroque violin. Not on original instruments, but still the best.
“There is some wonderful music here; the later concertos are every bit the equal of anything in The Trial between Harmony and Invention (Il Cimento Dell’Armonia E Dell’Inventione), and they are played gloriously.” (The Penguin Guide)

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Argo) Antonio Vivaldi – La Stravaganza (Marriner)

Thank you very much Jean-Luc for this jewel

I doubt anyone reading this, regardless of how long or little a classical music listener or collector, would include Englishman Neville Marriner among his or her list of great conductors of any of the modern, romantic, classical or baroque eras. Yet, Marriner gracefully conducted music from all those times in recordings for Decca/London, many of which remain alive and in circulation today. I would make an argument that none of his recordings — and he has many great ones — are better than this recording of Antonio Vivaldi’s dozen violin concertos collectively known as Op, 4 and La Stravaganza.

Farewell, Maestro Marriner. R.I.P. 🙁

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this gem
For a while in the mid-70s, this was the only available version of Vivaldi’s opus 3 concerti. This is one of the version (the very first was an obscure Italian release from the 70s I owned on cassette) from which I learned how wonderful this music was. And it IS wonderful…among Vivaldi’s best of his numbered opuses. It has tremendous atmosphere (recording acoustic helps) and luminosity. There is a lightness mostly throughout with beautiful solo contributions especially from Alan Loveday and Carmel Kaine (who also feature in Vivaldi’s La Stravaganza with ASMF-a ‘must-listen!’ that I will post next).

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Antonio Vivaldi – The Four Seasons (Virtuosi Di Roma/Fasano)

front-small-boxsetWhat can I say about such a marvellous performance of one of the greatest musical works of all time?  It’s terrific. This recording of The Four Seasons is SPECIAL. These are my favorite string concertos. And the Virtuosi di Roma are sensational. If you want one of the best performance of Vivaldi’s best work from the beginning era of Stereophony, get this.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (RCA) Antonio Vivaldi – The Four Seasons (I Solisti Veneti/Toso/Scimone)

front-small-boxsetThis is, in my opinion, not the definitive recording of The Four Seasons but an almost perfect one. The tempo, the passion of the playing, the conducting – all perfect. Most versions are much too legato and lack spirit, but this is great. A must-have for any Vivaldi fan and the evidence, that out there in this world, there are so many great artists without a “great” name, who deserve all our respect and admiration.

Many thanks to robbie52 for this gift

I Musici has long time been a famous interpereter on Vivaldi’s music. And as this record shows, they are definitly an authority. Vivaldi wrote hundreds of concertos, almost in the same style. But in between I Musici can distinguish the subtlety and delicacy of every piece. The result is a full and clear delination of Vivaldi’s concertos, with correct style and atmosphere.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca Eclipse) Haydn, Boccherini, Vivaldi – Cello Concerti (Fournier)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to Jean-Luc for these little pearls
Paris-born Pierre Fournier (1906-1986) was the leading French cellist of his time, renowned for his elegant playing of the standard repertoire and for his ties to such contemporary composers as Roussel, Schoeck, Martinon, Martin, Poulenc, and others whose works were dedicated to him or which he premiered. Fournier’s recordings include the major solo works and concertos, along with important chamber music pieces in which he was partnered by such artists as Schnabel and Kempff, among others.

This is one of the version from which I learned how wonderful this music was. And it IS wonderful…among Vivaldi’s best of his numbered opuses.
This disproves the accusation that Vivaldi wrote the same concerto hundreds of times: even though strings are the only sonority (enlivened here by varied continuo), the combinations of one, two, and four violin soloists provide endlessly different colours which the members of the Berlin  Philarmonic Orchestra fully exploit.
