HD-Vinyls 24/96 (RCA) Antonio Vivaldi – The Four Seasons (I Solisti Veneti/Toso/Scimone)

front-small-boxsetThis is, in my opinion, not the definitive recording of The Four Seasons but an almost perfect one. The tempo, the passion of the playing, the conducting – all perfect. Most versions are much too legato and lack spirit, but this is great. A must-have for any Vivaldi fan and the evidence, that out there in this world, there are so many great artists without a “great” name, who deserve all our respect and admiration.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Antonio Vivaldi – Sinfonie E Concerti (I Musici/Pina Carmirelli)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to robbie52 for this gift

I Musici has long time been a famous interpereter on Vivaldi’s music. And as this record shows, they are definitly an authority. Vivaldi wrote hundreds of concertos, almost in the same style. But in between I Musici can distinguish the subtlety and delicacy of every piece. The result is a full and clear delination of Vivaldi’s concertos, with correct style and atmosphere.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca Eclipse) Haydn, Boccherini, Vivaldi – Cello Concerti (Fournier)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to Jean-Luc for these little pearls
Paris-born Pierre Fournier (1906-1986) was the leading French cellist of his time, renowned for his elegant playing of the standard repertoire and for his ties to such contemporary composers as Roussel, Schoeck, Martinon, Martin, Poulenc, and others whose works were dedicated to him or which he premiered. Fournier’s recordings include the major solo works and concertos, along with important chamber music pieces in which he was partnered by such artists as Schnabel and Kempff, among others.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) Antonio Vivaldi – L’Estro Armonico – (Berliner Philarmoniker)

front-small-boxsetThank you very much Mats for this precious gift
This is one of the version from which I learned how wonderful this music was. And it IS wonderful…among Vivaldi’s best of his numbered opuses.
This disproves the accusation that Vivaldi wrote the same concerto hundreds of times: even though strings are the only sonority (enlivened here by varied continuo), the combinations of one, two, and four violin soloists provide endlessly different colours which the members of the Berlin  Philarmonic Orchestra fully exploit.

High-End HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Chasing The Dragon) Antonio Vivaldi – The 4 Seasons (Interpreti Veneziani)

front-small-boxsetIn creating this direct cut album, we had to overcome many challenges. Because the album had to be recorded “as live” I had to first find a piece of music which would be the perfect lenght. Obviously, I found the answer in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Next came the musicians and I was so lucky to have the opportunity of bringing over from Venice, the leading Venetian chamber orchestra, Interpreti Veneziani. Finally, I has to find a recording studio which not only had a superb sounding space, it also had to have an engineer versed in the black art of cutting live vinyl. Well, have we succeded? Please judge yourself, for I hope you have as much fun in listening as we had in cutting this disc (Mike Valentine)

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (EMI) Antonio Vivaldi – The 4 Seasons (Kennedy)

front-small-boxset Nigel Kennedy is as many know a wild musician, a force of nature. I saw him live early in the 90s and it was a very exciting experience for me, I knew him until then only under the etiquette of a punk, wild and eccentric musician. I learned to know a phantastic and lovely musician who deserves the full possible respect. His seriousity and smiling during the whole concert was astonishing.
This interpretation of the Four Seasons is quite “different” from the standard interpretation. Nigel Kennedy has added his personal touch giving the music a completely refreshed aspect. The dominating character of Kennedy’s violin gives out the appropriate tension in movements like the Presto from “L’estate” or the allegro from “L’inverno”. His interpretation is frantic, filling the listener with energy and vigor. And at movements like the adagio from “L’estate” the listener comes across a tender and delicate violin. This recording defiantly deserves a place at your music collection.

Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Tacet) Antonio Vivaldi – The 4 Seasons (Gaede)

front-small-boxset Another marvellous label, that came out in the last years with a row of impressive, outstanding recordings, is Tacet.
Long live the tube! This release in the “transistor-free” series by Tacet is another musical jewel. The music that Tonmeister Andreas Spreer with his nostalgic, exquisite recording technique, using nothing but tube microphones and tube amplifiers, has conjured onto the disc boasts a naturalness, warmth and vividness we thought had disappeared forever and had almost forgotten. Here a violin still sounds like a violin. Although I have around 20 different versions of Vivaldi’s Seasons and Carmignola is the King of them, this one is a “MUST”. I love it, when little known ensembles and soloists make turning pale etablished and well known “superstars”. Give this recording a chance, you will love it.

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Fonè) Antonio Vivaldi – The 4 Seasons (Accardo)

Please welcome another audiophile super-label: Fonè

I have read so much about the Italian super-label Fonè, so I thought, is time to hear the records, that so many HiFi lovers would never sell or give away. But I never expected it would be this hard to get the pearls that Signor Giulio Cesare Ricci (called Signoricci by the fans) produces, 100% analogue and very limited to 496 copies. Don’t ask me, why the hell 496 and not 500 😀 Finally I had luck and could get my hands on three of these black gold nuggets and….WOW ! My expectations weren’t disappointed.
Concerning this recordings of Vivaldi’s Seasons….I HAVE NO WORDS (and this happens not too often) – Hear it by yourself

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Telarc) Antonio Vivaldi – The 4 Seasons (Silverstein/Ozawa)

front-small-boxset
Thank you very much to our friend Mats for this precious gift
Vivaldi’s spirit must have been with the symphony when they recorded this. I have about 20 versions of Vivaldi’s 4 seasons and this is one of the best overall performance/recording. For example. the tight driven strings that break into the lazy beginning of the Summer section are awe inspiring. I had never really paid that much attention to that part until I heard this. My hat”s off also to the recording artists as this record is not overly awash in waltzy-smaltzy concert hall reverb. It is dynamic and tight! File this under “one of the top ten” performances of the seasons.

I just read of Mr. Silvertein’s death, Nov. 21.2015
