HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Thorens) Berlioz/Davis – Bruckner/Haitink – Strauss/Sinopoli – Shostakovich/Kondrashin

Many thanks to our friend Urbanox for this rarity
This double album is a homage to the Staatskapelle. As intended and commissioned by the Thorens company. The Swiss turntables manufacturer cannot rival the Orchestra’s 460 years, but at 125 years of age, Thorens holds the record as the oldest company of the entertainment industry still in existence. These LPs are meant as a double birthday gift: to ourselves, but above all to our many friends around the world. For friends of the Staatskapelle, friends of Thorens and above all, for lovers of good-quality music reproduction. (Heinz Roher, CEO Thorens)

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Philips) Ludwig van Beethoven – The 5 Piano Concerti (Brendel/Haitink)

front-small-boxset
Oh friends, I’m experiencing at now a paradigm shift in my understanding of the LvB piano concerti, concerning the best interpreter, who ever recorded them. In the origin I had only the concerti with Pollini and (three of the five concerti) with Benedetti-Michelangeli and I was happy for many years. Both great pianists, both marvellous in their interpretations although a little different from each other. Then I heard Katchen and I was speechless… then Arrau, Rubinstein and – OMG – Kempff !!! I thought, never in life can another pianist reach the level of these five “gods”. Oh, how wrong I was! Thanks to Trottar and Jean-Luc I “discovered” in the last 3 years my love for Brendel, an artist who was well known to be, but I never estimated more than just a little – don’t ask me why. Two weeks ago I found out by accident that Brendel had recorded the concerti and I was like electrified. In such moments I don’t think twice or a second too long: seen and purchased was a single act. Please welcome the sixt “god” in the olymp of the LvB piano concerti interpreters.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca/London) Dmitri Shostakovich – Symphony No. 5 (Haitink)

front-small-boxsetI’m no musicologist, but I think this is a remarkable recording of Shostakovich’s 5th symphony. This one has overall better production than Bernstein’s New York Philharmonic recording under Sony. Plus, Bernstein tends to conduct under some sort of emotional influence, Haitink does not. But that’s just my humble opinion. All in all, this is an “edge of your seat” kind of recording; loud, aggressive, and wicked! Thank you Maestro Haitink, Royal Concertgebouworkest, and the DECCA team.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Dmitri Shostakovich – Symphony No. 14 (Haitink)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Trottar
Despite the fact that there are multiple recordings of Shostakovich’s deeply moving Symphony No. 14, this recording is unique in the quality of performance: Bernard Haitink conducts his Concertgebouw Orchestra and elected to use non-Slavic singers Julia Varady and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who in turn sing the poems in their original languages rather than the Russian translations used in the original premiere. The effect is staggeringly beautiful and if one must choose a single recording of this symphony, this would be the one that captures the essence of Shostakovich’s vision.

HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Philips) WAM/LvB – Violin Concerto no. 5/Violin Romances (Szeryng)

front-small-boxset
Mozart’s violin concertos, although written when he was only 19, are among his finest works. And no violinist is more suited to do do justice to these masterpieces than Henryk Szeryng. Szeryng — although not as famous as some others — was one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. Although he excelled in a wide range of repertoire — from Vivaldi through Sibelius — Szeryng’s beautiful sweet tone and elegant performance style were especially effective in the performance of Mozart. No other violinist I’ve heard excels him in this repertoire. He was the consummate Mozart violinist. Highly recommended.
