Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this beauty Featuring the superb piano stylings of renowned French Pianist Jean-Phillippe Collard.
Saint Saëns, acclaimed for his sense of drama and ability to evoke mystery in his compositions, crafted five piano concertos over the course of his life, though only No. 2 garnered commercial success.Camille Saint-Saens’ sense of drama, his lyric runs, all make this listening experience highly recommended. I am fascinated by the way Saint-Saens creates rich variations of his themes as he takes us from movement to movement. Saint-Saens has the ability to develop ethereal melodies and variations on themes that are hypnotic and mystical. His piano runs are pushed for dramatic effect. The creative and amusing variations of his themes are pleasant and amusing.

The performances are elegant and powerful, beautifully played by Ciccolini and well supported by the orchestra under Baudo’s expert direction. Of special note is the exquiste recorded sound. Back in the early 70’s, this was considered one of the best engineered concerto recordings around, and it sounds great today. The balance between the piano and orchestra is superb; natural, spacious and clean. Aldo Ciccolini comes from the Busoni school of pianism, which combines German intellectualism with Italianate lyricism; those who might think these qualities are unsuited to the music of Saint-Saens should spend some time listening to these marvelous accounts. The approach is quite deliberate at times, but it allows the music to unfold in a way that reveals hidden depths of expression, due in large part to Serge Baudo’s careful direction. All in all, the pairing of Ciccolini and Baudo is a fine choice for a complete set of these piano concertos.

The Kansas City Symphony under Michael Stern present one of the finest recordings of Saint-Saens third Symphony available. Both conductor and organist achieve an optimal balance. You would not know this was not one of the top tier orchestras. Fine showcase for the great Casavant organ in Helzberg Hall.

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this rarity (Poulenc) In today’s zoological study are include Saint-Saens’ The Carnival of the Animals, without narration, that Pretre leads rather aggressively, and Poulenc’s nearly forgotten ballet, The Model Animals, which doesn’t try to be humorous or to evoke each animal with orchestral effects. It’s in Poulenc’s cheeky mixture of updated Offenbach and Charlie Chaplin movie music, with some undertones of worldly melancholy. If you didn’t know the title, you’d never suspect the work of being zoological.

Pierre Fournier is an incredible cellist and these performances of the concertos by Saint-Saens and Lalo are magical. Another added bonus to this recording is the inclusion of Bruch’s “Kol Nidrei for Cello and Orchestra”.
Lalo’s concerto is not among my favorite ones, but Fournier is the only cellist who motivates me to listen it. That’s why I recommend you. Because somehow, this Op. seems to have been composed for this memorable artist.
