HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) Nicoló Paganini – Violin Concerto No. 2 (Accardo)

This very well recorded disc effectively destroyed the competition when it first appeared and there have been no serious challenges since. Accardo plays with such consummate ease that is is difficult to imagine them being easily equalled, let alone bettered. Dutoit provides attentive support and the whole disc has excellent sound with good balance retained between soloist and orchestra. Paganini wrote 6 violin concertos of which by far the best known is the second which contains the melody known as ‘La Campanella’ used as the basis of the last movement. This is the best overall recording.
The performance by Accardo is simply flawless. He keeps his known style of simplicity and clarity. For example he doesn’t use any doubling of voice where others like Perlman does, or he prefer the pizzicato where some others stick with a staccato. Anyway, in my personal view of the Paganini stile’s, I think that Accardo’s is the closest I’ve heard.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Joaquín Rodrigo – Concierto De Aranjuez, Fantasía Para Un Gentilhombre (Bonell/Dutoit)

Thousand thanks to our friend Mats for this gem
“Concierto de Aranjuez” is one of the best songs ever written, a masterpiece written by Joaquin Rodrigo, the song is pure Spanish magic. The other song is “Fantasia para un gentilhombre”, another song penned by Rodrigo, it is just beautiful and evokes the essence of the elegant Spanish tradition. Once you’ve heard these songs you will be hooked and the song will play in your head long after it is not playing. Both of these songs have been performed by various artists but this is one of the best performances captured in Montreal in 1980-81. Carlos Bonnel is a maestro on guitar and Charles Dutoit is masterful conducting the Orchestre Symphonique De Montreal. This is one of those “classic” performances that sounds good no matter the time period it was recorded in.
