R.I.P. SPEARO MY FRIEND, I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!

Analogue Productions has taken a classic and shaped it to make the premier reissue of this already illustrious LP. Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound mastered this album from the original analog tapes. The lacquer cuts were plated and pressed by Quality Record Pressings. The Stoughton Printing old-style tip-on gatefold jacket has been upgraded handsomely by a series of rarely seen photos of Walter from the Sony Music Archives. Everything on this reissue shows quality. Released as 45rpm version as well one can argue this is the best possible version to get . A highly collectable and highly sonical “MUST Have” for the classic music lover.

Walter’s Eroica, recorded in January 1958 and his third studio recording after those he made in 1941 and 1949 with the New York Phil, is an excellent “traditional” reading. It may be exceptionable to call it that, because that kind of interpretive approach wasn’t dominant before World War II; it became more so after. Tempos are almost always on the slow side, a far cry not only from Beethoven’s controversially fast metronome marks but even from what the tempo indications at the beginning of the outer movements seem to suggest: “Allegro con brio” (1st movement), “Allegro molto” (finale).

Even Bruno Walter, who in old age was a softer conductor than anyone before or since, didn’t dare to swathe Haydn in romantic velvet. But Beethoven’s Sym. 1 and 2 gave him that opportunity. These cross-over works from the world of Haydn can be successfully played as heroic precursors (by Klemperer, Karajan and Bernstein, for example), but Walter strives to make them sunny and carefree, and his approach works.
In their way, these symphonies are the ideal introduction to Walter’s notions about Beethoven.

The melodious “Pastoral” symphony takes on added meaning in light of the circumstances in which Beethoven composed it – a time when he was experiencing great emotional torment. He had started losing his hearing in his late twenties. The loss was progressive, causing him deep despair. Seeking to ease his sorrows with long walks in the fields and forests, he jotted down musical ideas. From these, he created a number of masterpieces – among them his Sixth Symphony.

No conductor could have closer affinities with this genial yet gloriously vital symphony than Bruno Walter. Probably the most affectionately remembered maestro of recent times, he led the all-star west-coast Columbia Symphony Orchestra especially created for him in this characteristically Walterian Fourth. It was recorded in Hollywood, in February 1958, as part of his second cycle of all nine Beethoven symphonies.

This symphony’s orchestration differs from the conventional specifications of the time (wind instruments in pairs, timpani and strings) only in calling for a single flute rather than a pair. The first and last movements are in sonata form, the second may be considered to be in either rondo or sonata form, and the third, while called Menuetto in the score, is actually a genuine Beethoven scherzo.

Don’t be surprised by the not-as-good-as-normally quality of the sound – this is a Columbia recording from 1959. Philips, sonically ways superior than CBS, was here only the distributor.
When you hear to the 2nd mov. of Shostakovich’s concerto, don’t forget to breath…that beautiful it is.
