HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Peter Tchaikowsky – The Sleeping Beauty (Dorati)

front-small-boxsetAll thanks fly to Jean-Luc for this beauty
Antal Dorati was the Tchaikovsky Ballet pioneer. For Mercury Living Presence, he made the first-ever recordings of the complete versions of the Russian composer’s three great ballets. But Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty were mono recordings; he did two versions of Nutcracker, one mono and one stereo. So this stereo remake of Tchaikovsky’s greatest ballet was highly anticipated, particularly as it features the incomparable Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. True to form, the performance is magnificently played and warmly recorded. A no-brainer. — David Hurwitz.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca/London) Dmitri Shostakovich – Symphony No. 5 (Haitink)

front-small-boxsetI’m no musicologist, but I think this is a remarkable recording of Shostakovich’s 5th symphony. This one has overall better production than Bernstein’s New York Philharmonic recording under Sony. Plus, Bernstein tends to conduct under some sort of emotional influence, Haitink does not. But that’s just my humble opinion. All in all, this is an “edge of your seat” kind of recording; loud, aggressive, and wicked! Thank you Maestro Haitink, Royal Concertgebouworkest, and the DECCA team.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Dmitri Shostakovich – Symphony No. 14 (Haitink)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Trottar
Despite the fact that there are multiple recordings of Shostakovich’s deeply moving Symphony No. 14, this recording is unique in the quality of performance: Bernard Haitink conducts his Concertgebouw Orchestra and elected to use non-Slavic singers Julia Varady and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who in turn sing the poems in their original languages rather than the Russian translations used in the original premiere. The effect is staggeringly beautiful and if one must choose a single recording of this symphony, this would be the one that captures the essence of Shostakovich’s vision.

Many thanks for this beauty to our friend Jean-Luc
Antal Dorati was probably the great dance conductor of our age, and he pioneered recording the complete Tchaikovsky ballets. He made an outstanding stereo Nutcracker for Mercury Living Presence. Fine as that version is, this one is even better because the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra simply plays the music more elegantly than the London Symphony Orchestra on the earlier recording. In fact, this has been the version of choice for a couple of decades now. –David Hurwitz
