HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Supraphon) Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 7 (Neumann)

Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this splendid “Grandezza”
Vaclav Neumann (1920-95) was the first conductor behind the Iron Curtain to record all the Mahler symphonies. He did so with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, where he was kaepllmesiter from 1964-68, and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra of these recordings, where he gained greatest fame as chief conductor from 1968-90. Perhaps owing to the enforced mantra of Socialist reality in East Germany and Czechoslovakia during his time, beauty tends to replace neuroses in his recordings. Indeed, Neumann’s Mahler is about as far removed temperamentally as possible from the Mahler-as-neurotic standard of Bernstein, Solti, Tilson Thomas and others in the West. Instead, Neumann focuses on beauty of sound and orchestral execution. There is prodigious beauty here in this Symphony. The overall impression this left me is: beautiful. Not overly angsty, tortured Mahler; rather, Mahler led by a dedicated conductor and a fantastic Czech Orchestra.

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this rarity
These classic Karel Ancerl recordings are, in my opinion, among the best accounts of Mahler’s symphonies that are available at present. The playing of the orchestra is outstanding, especially the brass department (note the typical horn vibrato) and the recording quality is very good for its age. But, above all, this set is to be treasured for Ancer’s superb interpretation, which is as good as an interpretation can be: moving, powerful, balanced, convincing, non-mainstream, and provoking.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Supraphon) Antonin Dvorak – Violin Concerto/Romance For Violin (Suk)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Jean-Luc for this rare gem
The painful new of Suk’s death in 2011 made me rethink about this cruel statement; with his absence has dissapeared the last of the great exponents of the giants of the violin of the Great Middle Europe tradition. This school persisted on the fact to acquire personal expression, character and then the technique. That was the secret we may distinguish Heifetz sound, Stern sound, Nevue sound, Milstein sound, Rabin or Menuhin sounds. And Joseph Suk also belonged to this old school. This version of Dvorak violin concerto still remains among the supreme and until this date – unsurpassed performance – along the musical literature.
In memory of this legendary artist.

Due to an unknown reason, the begin of the 4th mov. was totally distorted. I don’t know why, how and when this happened. Anyway, I ripped the 4th mov. again. Please DL it following the well known link and replace the old track B1 with the new one. Thank you!
