Super HD-Vinyl 24/192 (EMI) Joseph Haydn/Luigi Boccherini – Cello Concerti (Du Pré/Barenboim)

front-small-boxset
Jacqueline du Pré was one of the most outstanding cellist of our time.
It is a great sin, not to know, who she was. Click here ! or you will be damned forever.
When I heard the news that Jacqueline du Pré had passed away – 30 years ago – I was saddened. I’d never met her, or even seen one of her live performances. But I’ve heard her recordings, and completely was absorbed in the way she made her instrument come to life. I was hoping that her music could still stay alive. These old recordings with her husband as Conductor are a great tribute to her love of music and how it speaks to us. I’ve always enjoyed listening to the Haydn Cello Concerti, and the way they are performed with majesty in these recordings will always speak to me

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Paganini, Dvorak, Bruch, Mendelssohn – Izthak Perlman plays 4 Violin Concerti

front-small-boxset
Once I had the honor to see & hear Mr. Perlman during a rehearsal one day before a concert in Berlin. I was in my former life travelling technician and one day I was (again) in Berlin, shortly after the fall of the wall. The customer, where I had to repair a gigantic printer had almost become a friend through many years and I always asked him, when I was there, who was actually there and with which concerto…or which orchestra, which maestro. Mostly there was nothing or not interessant for me (I was around 1-2 times in a year there). But one fine day the Muses were very friendly to me and Itzhak gave the Beethoven Concerto. Knowing my love to music, my customer asked me, if I would gladly attend to the rehearsal. I couldn’t believe it…. He phoned with someone and I could hear in the almost empty hall the wonderful playing of Mr. Perlman. Lucky me!

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy – Songs Without Words (Barenboim)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this beautiful box
These wonderfully musical performances of Mendelssohn’s “Songs without Words” by Daniel Barenboim display a pianism of highest order, the noble restraint of which reminds me of the artistry of Artur Rubinstein. Barenboim makes the instrument sing most beautifully and plays some of the most taxing scores with stunning dexterity and fluency. The 70s’ stereo recording has very realistic and full sound quality.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Ludwig van Beethoven – The Five Piano Concertos (Barenboim/Klemperer)

front-small-boxsetAlthough my four sets of Beethoven’s Concertos (Pollini, Kempff, Katchen, Arrau)  and Michelangeli’s 1st, 3rd and 5th, are the best I could find, there’s a grandeur in these performances that never crosses the line into clumsy heaviness, and in a strange way force coexists with suppleness. The Fantasia is a piece I fell in love with from the moment I heard it. This late 1960s recording of the Beethoven Piano Concertos is one of the best, and an interesting contrast: the young, brilliant pianist Barenboim with the elderly condcutor Klemperer.

HD-Vinyl Stereo 24/96 (DGG) Eduard Lalo – Symphonie Espagnole (Perlman/Barenboim)

front-small-boxset
As great as other violinists on some outstanding “Symphonie Espagnole” recordings are, Perlman really goes to the front of the line in my opinion. His beautiful intonation, amazing technique, and feel for this music (not at all self-indulgent) are just about as perfect as one can hope to get. The acoustics and sound of this recording are just as glorious as is the playing. Highly recommended.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Requiem (Barenboim)

front_small_boxsetThis recording is a gorgeous performance of Mozart’s excellent Requiem. Sheila Armstrong, the soprano, has a shimmering, pure, beautiful, above all a Mozartian voice – she shines in this recording. Baker has a rich voice that she uses with intelligence. Nicolai Gedda is radiant in the tenor role and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is at his considerable finest as the baritone. Daniel Barenboim conducts extremely well, and gets great singing and playing from his chorus and orchestra.
