I don’t think I have heard any performances more beautiful than this. On sheer beauty nobody compares to Baumgartner.
Thank you very much, Andy, for these remarkable performances

HD-Vinyl 24/192 (DGG) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Requiem (Karajan)

front_small_boxsetPay attention: completely re-ripped, for Joe, with the new Black Bird and in 24/192
A single word: “majesty” and a second word: “tenderness”, in front of death and in the look of God … This is what we hear here, much better than in most other versions. After studying several Mozart-Requiem performances I realized that this one is the most inspired and the closest to the Mozart rithym and sensibility. Better performed even than others directed also by Herbert v. Karajan. You can listen to other Mozart-Requiem versions, but once you listen to this one, you will not want another!

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) Richard Strauss – Death And Transfiguration/Four Last Songs (Karajan/Janowitz)

front_small_boxsetGundula Janowitz had a very beautiful voice that critics like to describe as “creamy,” whatever that means. Strauss had a life-long love affair with the soprano voice. He even married one–not just the voice, the whole woman, of course. His Four Last Songs constitute his dying tribute, and they are probably the most hedonistically gorgeous vocal works in existence. Herbert vo Karajan was a Strauss specialist, as was Janowitz, and together they contrive to perform the songs about as perfectly as they ever have been.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) H. Berlioz – Requiem (Munch)

front_small_boxset
Reposted, now with FF links
Charles Munch died in 1968, the year this Berlioz Requiem appeared. Munich is an unlikely place to look for Berlioz, but in several ways this remake is better than the original release with the BSO from 1960. Although only eight years separates the two, DG’s sound is considerably cleaner and more vivid than RCA’s.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 5 / Kindertotenlieder (Ludwig/Karajan)

front_small_boxset
Herbert von Karajan came to Mahler in a round-about way. His affinity with Richard Strauss and Anton Bruckner was life-long. Mahler he came to only after exploring the Second Viennese School of Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. Released in the mid-seventies this, his first Mahler recording is extraordinary. It is the only Mahler Symphony recorded by Karajan abd the BPO in the Jesus Christus Kirche and not in the Berlin Philharmonie. This brings a presence and warmth to the recorded sound not achieved by the engineers until much later in the Philharmonie.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Ludwig van Beethoven – Violin Concerto (Schneiderhan)

front_small_boxset
Dedicated to Monsieurs F. Senior & Junior (from P.)
My friends, you’ll never believe it – found this record (without cover) some years ago in our waste bin, with other 4-5 records…when I saw the label (DG, Tulip edition – YEAH), the composer (LvB – WOW), the artist (Schneiderhan – WOWOW) I knew: people, I found a gem of inestimable value. Pardon me, if there are some light noises, here & there… the record was (you guess it) in terrible condition, but I did my very best.
Sorry for the poor artworks, found them on internet.

Why, folk, while main DGG productions always sound well or very very good, the Archiv productions by the same house DGG sound much better?

Although he never received the publicity accorded to some more famous conductors, Carlo Maria Giulini was equal to, or better than, all such “star” conductors. In fact, Giulini was quite simply one of the half dozen or so greatest conductors of the 20th century.

Rare HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) Frederik Chopin – Piano Concertos 1 & 2 (Vasary)

front_small_boxset1
Vasary`s 1964/5 performances of the Chopin piano concertos are extremely enjoyable pieces of music making. I rank them right up there with the top of the field, and the field of these concertos is quite packed indeed.
For the concerto in E minor, I prefer Vasary`s straight-forward approach: consistent tempi and a fine display of delicacy in the slower, second movement. He rarely demonstrates flashy feats of look-at-me “personal artistry” which pervades other performances, such as with Zimerman and the Polish Fest. Orch. on DG.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) Claude Debussy – Images I / II – Children’s Corner (Michelangeli)

One of Michelangeli’s supreme recordings! What more can you ask for? Find me another recorded version of the Images to rival this one.
