HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Herbert von Karajan – Dances by Brahms & Dvorak

 front-small-boxset
Reposted – now with FF links
This is one of those recordings that should be in everyone’s music library. The Dvorak Slavonic Dances here are played with immaculate accuracy and beauty. It is a shame Karajan never recorded the complete works. The Hungarian Dances by Brahms are wonderfully performed. Karajan had a way of bringing out these minute melodic structures that simply “make” the music. The sound can be placed in the demonstration bracket and the performances themselves will not likely be out-matched anytime in the near future – truly classic performances deserving to be in every collector’s library.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Johann Sebastian Bach – The Musical Offering (Richter)

front-small-boxsetReposted, now with FF links
This is priceless music-making. One can really feel that Richter is performing and conducting from his own heart and love for Bach, and all the while the orchestra is inspired to sing and to dance with him. The horns are laughing, the violins singing, and the listener is invited to experience flashes of happiness and joy with the chattering harpsichord.
When celestial music meets the summit of man’s creative and loving spark, we lucky amateurs are left with this kind of immortal recording: glorious!

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) H. Berlioz – Requiem (Munch)

front_small_boxset
Reposted, now with FF links
Charles Munch died in 1968, the year this Berlioz Requiem appeared. Munich is an unlikely place to look for Berlioz, but in several ways this remake is better than the original release with the BSO from 1960. Although only eight years separates the two, DG’s sound is considerably cleaner and more vivid than RCA’s.

HD-Vinyls 96/24 (DGG) Antonin Dvorak – Stabat Mater (Kubelik)

front_small_boxset

Reposted, now with FF links
Dvorák’s solemnly lyrical setting of the Stabat Mater is one of the glories of 19th-century choral music, and this has always been regarded as one of its finest performances. Rafael Kubelík had few equals in this repertoire, and he knew just how to achieve the maximum of expression with a minimum of hesitation and dragging–critical in a work that is largely meditation and sorrowful reflection. A twofer price, this is the version to have. –David Hurwitz
