HD-Vinyl 24/192 (EMI/Angel) Gustav Mahler – Des Knaben Wunderhorn (Schwarzkopf, Fischer-Dieskau, Szell)

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for the wonderful Elisabeth&Dietrich
This performance is generally given top recommendation by Mahler devotees. Penguin, for example, says “Szell’s 1968 Kingsway Hall recording of ‘Des Knaben Wunderhorn’ was a primary recommendation for three decades at premium price. Now it rightly joins EMI’s “Great Recordings of the Century’ and the careful remastering plus the lower price will surely extend its catalogue life for a considerable time to come. The superb singing of Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau is underpinned by the wonderfully sensitive playing from the LSO under Szell, who matches and even surpasses his achievement with his own Cleveland Orchestra in the Fourth Symphony.” Gramophone is equally complimentary, having given this their Gramophone award, saying in their 2012 Guide: “EMI’s classic recording made in 1968 more or less puts all rivals out of the court. Even those who find Schwarzkopf’s singing mannered will be hard pressed to find more persuasive versions of the female songs than she gives, while Fischer-Dieskau and Szell are in a class of their own most of the time.” “Also, few command the musical stage as Fischer-Dieskau does in a song such as ‘Revelge’, where every drop of irony and revulsion from the spectre of war is fiercely, grimly caught.”

HD-Vinyl 24/192 (EMI) Richard Strauss – Four Last Songs (Schwarzkopf)

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this splendid gem
Schwarzkopf’s version of the Four Last Songs represents the closest the human voice comes to perfection, in an astounding piece of music that touches the deepest reaches of the soul. Her rendition of the single phrase “so tief im Abendrot” in the fourth song is incomparably sublime, even ecstatic. I don’t believe any other soprano will ever come close to her in interpreting this work. To me, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf with George Szell conducting, sings in the definitive heavenly recording of Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs and other lieder from 1966 and 1969 recordings.

Thank you Trottar
for this
Schwarzkopf, Gedda, Streich, Krebs, Kunz, et. al, all sparkle here in their roles, even in the dated sound world that EMI was able to present (under Legge and von Karajan) in what was (and still is, really) known as “Glorious”. Everyone here is spot on and authoritatively sung with great style and execution, which means of course “great fun” for us to listen to (and surely they had a grand time recording it also)! Suffice to say, though, that this is one of the very few recordings that remain at the top of the selection list for this wonderful comic operetta, J. Strauss’s crowning achievement. It’s a Keeper, for sure, and well worth seeking out.

All thanks for this legend belong to our friend Trottar
This Karajan Falstaff has much to recommend it: Fedora Barbieri’s Mistress Quickly is a force of nature, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, only slightly affected, is a liquid, appealing Alice Ford, and Luigi Alva and the young Anna Moffo are ideal as the young lovers, Fenton and Nanetta. But the star–as it should be–is Tito Gobbi in the title role. As is usual with this great singing actor, his characterization comes from within–his is a Falstaff born to be deflated, arrogant and self-deluding on a level that is actually funny. And the nice surprise is what good voice Gobbi’s in–he’s in charge of all of his vocal colors here and he uses all of them well. Karajan’s touch is light and, yes, funny, and he treats the opera as the divine ensemble work it is, all leading up to a superb final scene. A good time is had by all–listeners included. –Robert Levine.

Many thanks to our friend Trottar for this gem

This recording of Mahler 2nd dates from 1961-1962, but dont be afraid about the sound quality because it is one of the most powerful old stereo you can find out there. And the performance is awesome…remember that this is Klemperer conducting, and conducting his favorite Mahler symphony. If you have to listen one reconding of Mahler’s 2nd for the first time this is the one you must hear. You will not be dissapointed, trust me.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Columbia) Johann Sebastian Bach – St. Matthew Passion (Klemperer)

front-small-boxset All thanks for tis gem go to our friend Jean-Luc
The real test of greatness, both in content and in performance is the effect of repeated hearing–especially repeated hearing without focused concentration. After a while, both the art and the artistry of a recording like this make themselves felt in an undeniable way. Most important of all, the effect of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is to immerse the listener in the feelings and philosophies of an event that forms the foundation of western culture. This recording of the St. Matthew Passion captures all the feeling and emotion present in the Biblical passages upon which it is based. It is an excellent recording to use for study due to its extremely slow tempo. The tempo, however, unfortunately makes it rather tedious if you do not love the piece before listening to this recording. The final chorus, “Wir setzen uns,” is magnificently done, as is the opening chorus. The soloists are superb, and Klemperer certainly knows how to make one wait for a chord to resolve. All in all, it’s simply amazing.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – Requiem (Giulini)

front_small_boxsetEven though the corruption of the Heirarchy, mainly about power, put him off the Church, and made it difficult for him to believe, Verdi expresses here his faith, or longing for faith. The Giulini recording of Verdi’s “Requiem” has long been a favorite of many listeners, both for the conducting and the quality of the soloists, most of whom were at the peak of their careers.
