Particular HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Concertos for 2 & 3 Pianos (Schmidt/Frantz/Eschenbach)

front_small_boxset
Many thanks to our friend HerbertKegel for this precious gift.
A man who loves Mozart and plays his music, cannot be a bad politician 😉
Three Steinways – One London Philharmonic – Two Keyboard Virtuosos – One former Chancellor of West Germany. It’s a potent mixture. A pity, that it hadn’t the succes the other Helmut Schmidt recording (Bach on DGG) had.

EDIT Nov./9th/15: read just few minutes ago that health condition of former Chancellor Schmidt (96) has dramatically changed in the last hours. I’m afraid he’s goin’ to go 🙁

EDIT Nov./10th/15 Helmut Schmidt died today !

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Joseph Haydn – Piano Sonatas Hob. XVI 20, 37, 52 (Weissenberg)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Trottar for more Haydn
This is an excellent performance by an underappreciated pianist. Alexis (formerly “Sigi”) Weissenberg, a student of such eminences as Artur Schnabel, Wanda Landowska, and Olga Samaroff (formerly Lucy Hickenlooper from Texas) has been around a long time (he is in his mid-seventies). Weissenberg’s superb articulation enables full appreciations of Haydn’s rapid passagework.

All thanks for this gift go to Jean-Luc
These recordings of Poulenc’s concerto for Organ, Strings and Percussion and his heavenly GLORIA will be for a looong time hard to beat. The organist for the concerto was none other than MAURICE DURUFLE’ the last great french classical organist/composer. The wonder of the GLORIA is the solo by coluratura Rosanna Carteri, the Italian soprano who has such a wonderful voice. POULENC was in attendance at that performance!

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Carl Maria von Weber – Abu Hassan (Moser/Gedda/Moll)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this beauty go to our friend Bob
Written in 1810, this frothy little farce reflects the then-current fashion for “Turkish” themes. The overture is fizzingly brilliant, leading to a sequence of ten numbers, only three of them arias, including two for Abu Hassan’s wife, Fatime. The plot involves the machinations of Abu Hassan to get himself out of debt, with the Caliph (one of the three speaking roles) finally awarding him a thousand gold pieces. Sawallisch conducts a brilliant performance, with Nicolai Gedda in the title role pointing his music lightly, with Edda Moser vibrantly as his wife, and with Kurt Moll superb as the grasping money lender, Omar.
This come with first rate sound, engineered in 1975 by an EMI-Electrola team.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Rossini/Respighi – La Boutique Fantasque

front-small-boxset
Complete new rip, with the current engines of 2013/14
Respighi’s recasting of a clutch of Rossini tunes, La boutique fantasque, is full of loud, confident music, and in spite of a marked strain of hamminess is undeniably infectious and enjoyable. The LSO under Maestro Gardelli plays it all with a straight face and makes a real success of things. Horns are bright and brilliant, strings ebullient, everything as gross and brash as the music demands, switching to a pleasurably melting and sentimental mood for the ‘Valse lente’ movement and culminating in a noisy, declamatory and expertly rendered fugato. There are plenty of versions of La boutique fantasque in the catalogue, but unless one is particularly addicted to Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops (RCA), this recording is the one I would go for.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Johannes Brahms – Symphony No. 4 (CSO/Giulini)

front_small_boxset
Reposted on demand, now with FF links
The Giulini/CSO performance of the Brahms 4th is, in my opinion, the finest, and certainly my undeniable favorite, of all time. I like the tempos, the playing, the artist’s concept, and the dark, melancholy Brahms sound that CMG inevitably evinces from whatever orchestra he is leading. The CSO was a great instrument, period, and certainly a great one for him. But truthfully I have not heard him conduct a Brahms symphony with an orchestra that did not sound like the best Brahms orchestra.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giacomo Puccini – Madama Butterfly (Scotto/Bergonzi/Barbirolli)

front_small_boxset
Maybe you know, my friends, that I’m not a fan of Mrs Scotto. But, hell, I must admit, she’s here totally into the role of the unhappy Cio-Cio-San, that she has touched me…Glad to have heard her on this beautiful set, that I only bought because of Bergonzi. I have never been so moved. I have some fine recordings of Butterfly — Tebaldi, Freni, Price — yet none have moved me as this one. They all have their fine points, and moving parts that bring one to tears, but this recording is so much more than the occasional fine moment. After I heard this opera twice in a row, I’m convinced, that this is the best “Butterfly” in the milky way.

Super HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Charles Gounod – RomĂ©o et Juliette (Freni/Corelli)

This is maybe the best possible tragic-love story by Shakespeare you will ever listen to. Young Mirella Freni and Franco Corelli (oh, what a dream-team) weep all doubts away. When you have listened to the grandious sounding opening sequence of this opera, you’ll be sure: this is the best “Romeo and Juliet” on earth.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Requiem (Barenboim)

front_small_boxsetThis recording is a gorgeous performance of Mozart’s excellent Requiem. Sheila Armstrong, the soprano, has a shimmering, pure, beautiful, above all a Mozartian voice – she shines in this recording. Baker has a rich voice that she uses with intelligence. Nicolai Gedda is radiant in the tenor role and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is at his considerable finest as the baritone. Daniel Barenboim conducts extremely well, and gets great singing and playing from his chorus and orchestra.

HD-Vinyl 24/192 (EMI) Carl Orff – Carmina Burana (FrĂŒhbeck De Burgos)

front_small_boxset
This copy seems to be a promotional one, because of a sticker on the rear cover, “telling” that this is “Manufacturers Property Not For Sale”.
This recording was made shortly after FrĂŒhbeck de Burgos had lead the piece in concert with the New Philharmonia. The performance, which he conducted from memory, was hailed as a breakthrough in nuanced yet sometimes barbaric intensity. The chorus and soloists gave FrĂŒhbeck de Burgos everything he asked for in this recording. I highly recommend this recording.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – Requiem (Giulini)

front_small_boxsetEven though the corruption of the Heirarchy, mainly about power, put him off the Church, and made it difficult for him to believe, Verdi expresses here his faith, or longing for faith. HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – Otello (Vickers/Freni)

front_small_boxset
You can get this Otello in the EMI studio version being reviewed here or as a live performance on Opera d’Oro, both almost identical in every detail musically. Vickers was, after Del Monaco’s retirement, the supreme Otello of his generation, with a huge, magnificent voice and heartbreaking pathos–he doesn’t bluster or fake it emotionally for even a bar. His death scene is one of the great things in the Verdi canon on disc. Freni is equally wonderful, exemplary in eveyr way musically and a prime example of how to act through the voice. Her Desdemona is ravishing and her last-act solos heartrending.
