HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Piano Concertos KV 595 & KV 365 (Elena & Emil Gilels)

front-small-boxset
Thank you Jean-Luc for this great recordings
This is probably the best 27th I’ve heard, with the great Russian pianist Emil Gilels at the pinnacle of his career. Here (and in K 365) the Vienna Philharmonic, led brilliantly by Karl Böhm, provides rich, colorful, authoritative support. In K 365, Mozart’s Double Concerto, Elena Gilels, a very talented player in her own right, joins her father. A lovely, mood-shifting composition for 2 pianos–is a great way to accompain this magical 27th. These 1970s recordings were superbly engineered, and the digital transfers are warm and vibrant. There’s good balance between piano(s) and orchestra, and nice stereo separation of the two pianos.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (World Record Club) Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Concerto No. 4 (Gilels/Szell)

All thanks for this gem go to Lemarquis
Gilels recorded Beethoven’s concertos three times, and the recordings with Szell are simply the best. Recordings are made in the 60’s, and Gilels was in his best “Beethoven-form” then. When he was younger, he preferred to super-virtuoso romantic pieces, but from 1950’s he started to play Beethoven more and more. These interpretations are quite plastic, Gilels plays this like Viennesse-classical pieces should be played: everything is clear, but nothing is exaggrerated. And sound is so Gilels-like: Bright and metallic (in a positive meaning!!)! Szell proves an excellent accompanist with his superb Cleveland orchestra. A conductor who was especially famous for his interpretations of Viennese-classics. Gilels gives room to delightful solos by flute/oboe here and there – one gets a feeling that this is a chamber orchestra playing with piano in it! Not just orchestra against the piano. The tonal range is marvellous.

All thanks for these gems go to Trottar

Emil Gilels (1916-1985) could summon thunderous waves of sound from the keyboard, but was equally capable of melting tenderness and delicate nuance. This extraordinary box set brings together live chamber music performances made in Moscow and London from 1950 to 1958 with Gilels and other world-famous artists. Violinist Leonid Kogan, violist Rudolf Barshai, and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich were all among the greatest instrumentalists of their era, and their collaboration in these rare live recordings make this set indispensable to any collector.
