HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Francis Poulenc – La Musique De Chambre (Fournier, Le Quintette À Vent De Paris, Menuhin)

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this marvellous set
Francis Poulenc had throughout his life a predilection for wind instruments. He composed for the winds at the very beginning (sonata for 2 clarinets) at the very end of his career (sonatas for clarinet and piano, for oboe and piano). But this did not prevent him from producing during the Second World War two magnificent sonatas for violin and piano and cello and piano (each dedicated to Ginette Neveu and Pierre Fournier). His music

Mono HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Vladimir Horowitz – Recordings from 1930-1951

All thanks for this historic set go to Trottar
I give 5 stars for this boxset despite the old recording sound. Sound of piano itself is reasonably well for the day once you are used to the background noise, good enough to convey the subtlty and delicacy of his playing. Prokofiev’s Toccata is still fastest and most exciting on records, verging on super-human. Rachmaninov’s 3rd concerto is the best performance by Horowitz with more argency and intensity than his later recordings. The incandescent account of Liszt Sonata is one of the most compelling and beautiful along side Richter and Pogorelich’s classic accounts. Haydn and Scarlatti sonatas, Beethoven variations, Schumann’s Toccata, Chopin Etudes, Stravinsky’s Petrushka and so much more display Horowitz’ keen sense of tonal colours and mind blowing fluency of playing.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Poulenc, Saint-Saens – Les Animaux Modeles, Le Carnaval des Animaux (Pretre)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Jean-Luc for this rarity (Poulenc)
In today’s zoological study are include Saint-Saens’ The Carnival of the Animals, without narration, that Pretre leads rather aggressively, and Poulenc’s nearly forgotten ballet, The Model Animals, which doesn’t try to be humorous or to evoke each animal with orchestral effects. It’s in Poulenc’s cheeky mixture of updated Offenbach and Charlie Chaplin movie music, with some undertones of worldly melancholy. If you didn’t know the title, you’d never suspect the work of being zoological.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Francis Poulenc – Gloria, Organ Concerto (Carteri/Duruflé/Pretre)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this gift go to Jean-Luc
These recordings of Poulenc’s concerto for Organ, Strings and Percussion and his heavenly GLORIA will be for a looong time hard to beat. The organist for the concerto was none other than MAURICE DURUFLE’ the last great french classical organist/composer. The wonder of the GLORIA is the solo by coluratura Rosanna Carteri, the Italian soprano who has such a wonderful voice. POULENC was in attendance at that performance!
