HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Mercury) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Serenade No. 10 For Winds (Fennell)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this beatiful vinyl
While I love the Mercury Living Presence label, I have generally shied away from the Frederick Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble titles. Their repertoire has always struck me as uninteresting “light” fare, but the exception is this Mozart’s Serenade. Not only do we get a delightful, impeccably performed Mozart nugget in Serenade No. 10; of course, the glorious MLP sound makes this recording absolutely  worthwhile.

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Telarc) Holst/Händel/Bach (Fennell)

front-small-boxsetIt is rare these days to hear an ensemble sound as if they actually enjoy what they are playing. This album has that sound. There are technically better recordings, but none (that I have heard) with the “musicallity” that Fennell brings out. The horn “rip” in Suite in F positively has a grin on it! These are musicians, not instrumental technicians. Such a wonderful difference. And when Fennell “unchains” the big drum, oh boy, you better pray to have bought very good speakers and amps.
