HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Decca) Richard Strauss – Elektra (Nilsson, Resnik, Solti)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to Trottar for his generosity
If ever there was a dysfunctional family, it was the one in this opera, based on a Greek tragedy but deeply imbued with the ideas of Sigmund Freud. The mother Clytemnestra (mezzo-soprano Regina Resnik) and her lover Aegisthus (tenor Gerhard Stolze) have murdered the father, Agamemnon, on his triumphant return from the Trojan War. They have an excuse: Agamemnon gave his daughter Iphigenia for a human sacrifice. Another daughter, Elektra (soprano Birgit Nilsson), burns for revenge, but as a woman in a patriarchal society, she must use her brother Orestes (baritone Tom Krause) to execute her plan. Nilsson’s portrayal is a high point of her career, and the whole brilliant production matches her performance. This is not easy listening, but it puts us in touch with dark realities dangerous to ignore, and the music (after you get used to it, which may take a while) has great power. –Joe McLellan

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Decca) Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 8 – Solti

Many thanks to our friend Trottar for another gem
Mahler conducting has moved in a different direction from what we hear on this recording of the Seventh under Solti. Comparison with almost any other famous account — from Bernstein, Abbado, Boulez, or Tennstedt — reveals how extroverted and hyper-energized Solti is. The recording has been engineered for maximum detail, almost x-ray like, and any ambiguous or problematic aspects in the score are charged through, with forward momentum prevailing over anything else.

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Decca) Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 3 (Solti)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to Jean-Luc for another Mahler/Solti masterpiece
The Third Symphony is Mahler’s hymn to the natural world and his longest work. It was largely composed in the summer of 1895 after an exhausting and troubling period that pitched him into feverish creative activity. Bruno Walter visited him at that time and as Mahler met him off the ferry Walter looked up at the spectacular alpine vistas around him only to be told: “No use looking up there, that’s all been composed by me.” Mahler was inspired by the grandeur around him at the very deepest level of feeling and also by visions of Pan and Dionysus. In fact by a sense of every natural creative force in the universe infusing him into “one great hymn to the glory of every aspect of creation”, or, as Deryck Cooke put it: “a concept of existence in its totality.”

Georg Solti was a conductor who always strived for excellence. Sometimes, he did not achieve his objective. However, more often than not, he did. In this Mahler Symphony No. 6, recorded shortly after he took command as Music Director of the Chicago Symphony, he hit a home run. Solti was never one to wallow, unlike Celibidache or Knappertsbusch. In his younger years, he was given the moniker “the screaming skull.” He was renowned for his ability to tackle complicated scores and was a regular both in the opera house and the symphony hall.

My friends, you know about all the things in life that are simply the truth and you cannot do anything but to accept it: sun rises up, every day – earth is not a plate – Sir Georg Solti and Decca made the best Wagner-cycle and Mahler-cycle on earth. Period! Solti does a very fine job here, and having heard many other recordings of the 4th Symphony I still place this disc near the top. Of course, the exquisite music, especially the third movement,is the real focus here, but Solti does a admirable job. To me, this is one of Mahler’s greatest works, rivalling the 5th & 9th Symphonies, or, Das Lied von der Erde.
Highly recommended.

Many thanks for this masterpiece to our friend Jean-Luc
I learned that this recording was just removed from the RCA print list. What a shame and what a stupid thing to do. This is one of the finest Rigoletto ever produced. The dream cast includes Bob Merrill, Anna Moffo (one of her finest recordings), Alfredo Kraus, Roz Elias, Ezio Flagello, and conducted by Solti in a bright, vibrant, and stunning recording–sharp vocals, quality orchestra throughout, finest mixing. The production is also one of the most dramatic Rigolettos ever, which is as it should be. Rigoletto is after all a descent into evil and revenge, and this recording does it justice throughout. I can listen to this recording over and over. A true modern masterpiece.

Many thanks to our friend from Michigan Lake for this gift.
This is the recording by which others should be judged. Solti captures the raucousness of Falstaff, using and emphasizing the horns like great comedic guffaws. Geraint Evans oozes unctiousness and Freni sweetly takes on the only aria in the whole opera.
