HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Gustav Mahler – Des Knaben Wunderhorn (Schwarzkopf, Fischer-Dieskau, Szell)

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for the beautiful Elisabeth
This performance is generally given top recommendation by Mahler devotees. Penguin, for example, says “Szell’s 1968 Kingsway Hall recording of ‘Des Knaben Wunderhorn’ was a primary recommendation for three decades at premium price. Now it rightly joins EMI’s “Great Recordings of the Century’ and the careful remastering plus the lower price will surely extend its catalogue life for a considerable time to come. The superb singing of Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau is underpinned by the wonderfully sensitive playing from the LSO under Szell, who matches and even surpasses his achievement with his own Cleveland Orchestra in the Fourth Symphony.” Gramophone is equally complimentary, having given this their Gramophone award, saying in their 2012 Guide: “EMI’s classic recording made in 1968 more or less puts all rivals out of the court. Even those who find Schwarzkopf’s singing mannered will be hard pressed to find more persuasive versions of the female songs than she gives, while Fischer-Dieskau and Szell are in a class of their own most of the time.” “Also, few command the musical stage as Fischer-Dieskau does in a song such as ‘Revelge’, where every drop of irony and revulsion from the spectre of war is fiercely, grimly caught.”

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (EMI) Richard Strauss – Four Last Songs (Schwarzkopf)

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this splendid gem
Schwarzkopf’s version of the Four Last Songs represents the closest the human voice comes to perfection, in an astounding piece of music that touches the deepest reaches of the soul. Her rendition of the single phrase “so tief im Abendrot” in the fourth song is incomparably sublime, even ecstatic. I don’t believe any other soprano will ever come close to her in interpreting this work. To me, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf with George Szell conducting, sings in the definitive heavenly recording of Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs and other lieder from 1966 and 1969 recordings.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (MFP) Joseph Haydn – Symphonies No. 97 & 98 (Szell)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this go to Lemarquis
Though he could be something of a tyrant as a conductor (cut as he was from the same cloth as Arturo Toscanini), there is no question that the twenty-four seasons that George Szell spent as the music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, from 1946 until his death in July 1970, molded that once-provincial ensemble into an orchestra that rivalled its counterparts in Vienna and Berlin. Franz Joseph Haydn was one of those composers he put a special emphasis on, as can be evidenced on this recording.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (World Record Club) Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Concerto No. 4 (Gilels/Szell)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this gem go to Lemarquis
Gilels recorded Beethoven’s concertos three times, and the recordings with Szell are simply the best. Recordings are made in the 60’s, and Gilels was in his best “Beethoven-form” then. When he was younger, he preferred to super-virtuoso romantic pieces, but from 1950’s he started to play Beethoven more and more. These interpretations are quite plastic, Gilels plays this like Viennesse-classical pieces should be played: everything is clear, but nothing is exaggrerated. And sound is so Gilels-like: Bright and metallic (in a positive meaning!!)! Szell proves an excellent accompanist with his superb Cleveland orchestra. A conductor who was especially famous for his interpretations of Viennese-classics. Gilels gives room to delightful solos by flute/oboe here and there – one gets a feeling that this is a chamber orchestra playing with piano in it! Not just orchestra against the piano. The tonal range is marvellous.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (CBS) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Sinfonia Concertante, Exultate Jubilate (Szell)

front-small-boxset

The ‘Sinfonia Concertante’ in E flat for violin and viola, K364, is an iconic work for many Mozart lovers, and arguably the greatest music he wrote in Salzburg. Yet, frustratingly, we know nothing about its origins. Apart from a sketch for the first-movement cadenza, the autograph has disappeared. Neither Mozart nor any of his contemporaries ever mentioned the work. It seems fair to assume that, inspired by the sinfonie concertanti he had encountered in Paris and Mannheim, he composed it, in summer or autumn 1779, for himself to play with the Salzburg court Konzertmeister Antonio Brunetti. But this remains guesswork.

Shortly before the holidays last year, I got a PM letting me know that there was a skip in the second movement of this rip. The original was done almost two years ago and grabbed over 250 times. No one had said a word till now.

Normally, I would just copy/paste a fix and repost that track. Unfortunately (for me), that wasn’t possible, because I had changed my cart and preamp since then. A copy/paste job would most likely be noticeable. So what’s a ripper to do? Re-rip the entire symphony with the new gear, of course!

So, for anyone who may be interested, here’s a brand new rip (now available in 24/192 too).

Ever since I started posting rips from the Franklin Mint collection, people have been asking me to post a complete FM cycle of the Beethoven symphonies. Right before I upgraded the cartridge and preamp, I ripped all nine of them, with the full intent of posting them. Well, one thing led to another and they never got posted. Time to do something about that…

These will be posted on an “as I have time” basis, but I should have them all up fairly soon. Starting with Symphony No. 1 (of course), I’ll be posting them one by one on the front page. Each time I post a new one, I’ll bump the post to the top of the home page. As you would probably expect, the recordings will vary in sound quality. Some will be stereo, some will be mono. But all of them are highly listenable in their own right.

As always, if anyone has requests for other titles in this set, please add them to the comments or PM me directly.
