HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Sony) Jonas Kaufmann – Nessun Dorma! – The Puccini Album

front-small-boxset
For those of us who deeply admire the artistry of tenor Jonas Kaufmann for his Wagner roles and his recitals of lieder this recording comes with a bit of trepidation. Will this intensely musical artist make the Puccini roles as convincing as he has those of other composers or will he plunge and lurch into the Italianate style of belting we so often encounter in the opera house?

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (RCA) Giacomo Puccini – Tosca (Price/Domingo/Milnes)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Bob for this beauty
There are so many good and very good “Toscas” out there, that you have only the embarrassement of choice. I used to own back in the 90s not less than 15 different releases on vinyl/CD/Video. Now only 6 and among them this one on CD, only and exclusively because of the most malefic Baron Scarpia you can imagine, even more terriffic than on a later Decca release, with Freni and Pavarotti. Sherrill Milnes is, after magnificent and legendary Tito Gobbi, the pure evil called Scarpia. Not at least, Leontyne Price (1st black opera singer, who became a superstar) and a young Placido Domingo are marvellous in their roles. Maestro Mehta shows here that he was born for conducting operas, forcing musicians and singers to give their best. Absolutely RECOMMENDED!!!!

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Giacomo Puccini – Madame Butterfly (De Los Angeles/Björling)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Bob for this masterpiece
Certain recorded Butterflys are considered to be definitive, with Toti dal Monte, Maria Callas and Renata Scotto leading the pack. Because of the strong competition, this 1955 recording does not automatically come to mind as a classic Butterfly performance. That is too bad because Victoria de los Angeles, in her second recording of the opera, is wonderfully natural in the title role. While she may not plumb the depths of the part in the way that some other sopranos have, her voice, while still carrying the drama and Butterfly’s pathos, sounds more youthful than that of many of her competitors.
I think this was Jussi Björling’s last complete opera recording; it may well be one of his best. His aristocratic style is just as valid as the more impetuous interpretation of Giuseppe di Stefano, De Los Angeles’ first recorded Pinkerton.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Giacomo Puccini – Manon Lescaut (Caballé/Domingo)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend from Lake Michigan.
Puccini’s Manon Lescaut is an Italian lyric tragedy drama. The opera is centered on Manon Lescaut (Montserrat Caballé), a beautiful young girl about to be sent to a convent. When Chevalier Des Grieux (Placido Domingo) sees her the flame of passion between them is ignited. Manon’s life is a winding one: seduced by riches that ultimately trigger her downfall but ultimately finding redemption in Des Grieux’s love for her. Conductor Bruno Bartoletti leads the New Philharmonia Orchestra as they traverse Puccini’s gorgeous melodies that permeate the opera, from Manon’s poignant arias to the lush orchestral score.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (RCA) Giacomo Puccini – Turandot (Nilsson, Björling, Tebaldi, Leinsdorf)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to our friend Bob for this gem
Even though I prefer Sutherland over Nilsson in the role of Turandot, this is the BENCHMARK. Even though Pavarotti & Caballé with Sutherland, Fernandi & Schwarzkopf with Callas and Corelli & Scotto with Nilsson on the other album are excellent, Björling & Tebaldi are the pick of the litter! The role of Calàf as sung by Björling, is one of the most beautifully sung portrayals in recorded music (subjective, personal opinion). Tebaldi’s pianissimi are absolutely ethereal, easily rivaling Caballé and surpassing Scotto. For early “Living Stereo”, the sound is surprisingly spacious and clean. This I believe was Björling’s last complete opera recording; the Verdi Requiem closely following.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (CBS) Giacomo Puccini – Turandot (Carreras/Marton/Ricciarelli)

Many thanks to our friend Bob for this gem

This strikingly-staged production of Puccini’s final opera, “Turandot” was filmed with the Vienna State Opera under the direction of Loren Maazal in 1983. Set on a spare stage with a single ascending staircase rising up to Turandot’s chambers, and with sumptuous, impressionistic costuming, the production allows…

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Giacomo Puccini – Manon Lescaut (Freni/Domingo/Sinopoli)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
This is a very beautiful and dramatic opera, and the cast is first-rate, singing their respective parts with unrivaled technical mastership and dramatic abilities. Placido Domingo and Mirella Freni as the lovers Manon and Des Grieux suffuse their singing with a measure of beautiful Puccini lyricism and verisimo power. They give strong performances and to me, they never falter. By the finale, I was in tears. Domingo is passionate, tormented and Freni is dramatic, full of despair. Their voices escalate to such an unbelievable height of glory it’s breathtaking. If you’re a fan of Mirella Freni and Placido Domingo, this is by far their best collaboration.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giacomo Puccini – La Bohème (Freni/Gedda/Schippers)

front-small-boxset1000 thanks to our friend Bob for this precious gift
For me this Mimí of 1964 is better than the Decca-Mimí of 1973, with Pavarotti…and she is terrific fantastic in that release. All singers here could have been “only” decent, the orchestra too and the maestro too…I would have bought it anyway, 1000 times again and again, alone for beautiful Mirella and her fresh, angelic voice. People, get it, you never find a better Mirella Freni.
