HD-Vinyls 24/96 (RCA) Giuseppe Verdi ‎- La Forza Del Destino (Price/Merrill/Tucker)

Another big “thank you” for this gem flights to our Chicago friend 😀
Fortunately we have two wonderful Forza’s with Leontyne Price–a later one (and one more readily available) with Placido Domingo, Sherill Milnes, Fiorenza Cosotta and Gabriel Bacquier, conducted by James Levine, and this earlier one from 1965. While the later one is an excellent recording, the earlier one takes the cake.
Conducted by Thomas Schippers, whose career was tragically cut short by cancer, it bursts forth with an energy and enthusiasm that just can’t be surpassed. The cast is an American Who’s Who of opera in the mid-’60s. Leontyne Price was not yet 40 when she recorded Leonora on this recording, and she brings to the production the skill and dramatic ability of a mature artist but with a voice still with the bloom of youth and freshness. The combination is incredible.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca/London) Giuseppe Verdi ‎- Macbeth (Nilsson/Taddei/Schippers)

A huge “thank you” for this gem flights to our Chicago friend 😀
The acclaimed legendary Swedish dramatic Wagnerian soprano Birgit Nilsson, (1918-2005), made her official debut in 1947 at the Stockholm opera as Lady Macbeth. After just three days notice to replace an ailing colleague she had actually debuted in the same house one year earlier as Agathe in Der Freischutz. There were only four or so Verdian roles suited for her special abilities; Turandot, Aida, Lady Macbeth and Amelia. She once refused to learn Norma saying that it had “two many little notes”. She also once said that “Turandot made me rich, Isolde made me famous”. However there are apparently no recordings of any of her staged performances of Lady Macbeth, just this studio recording of excerpts made in London in 1964 under the brilliant conducting of Thomas Schippers.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Mario Del Monaco sings Verdi

The Greatest Tenor of Them All. Del Monaco is in wonderful voice here, a voice filled with both Power and Beauty. Just listen and you will hear why Del Monaco is the Tenors Tenor. A force of Nature! This is the most commonly used sentence when someone wants to describe the voice of Mario Del Monaco. Not many tenors can sing those high notes which del Monaco reaches, with such ease!
This selection is a particular fine one, also due to the fact, that here are some of Verdi’s less known operas represented, like Alzira, Aroldo, I Due Foscari, I Lombardi, I Masnadieri.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (RCA) Giuseppe Verdi – La Traviata (Moffo, Tucker, Merrill)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for the beautiful Anna go to Astoler
Once in a lifetime a star is born that has it all – the talent, the looks, the musicality, and the technique. Moffo was just that. I read that before her auto accident which left her with a crushing back pain, impairing her singing, she had to be seen to be believed. Well, with the time-machine is still on the backburner, listening to the old restored recordings is the only way to experience the art of the bygone era. Her Violetta has it all – gorgeous voice with shimmering top notes and strong low register, amazing precise coloratura, and most importantly vulnerability and humanity. Her diction is very clear, every word is heard without any strain, and she conveys a strong sense of being completely ensnared in her character’s plight. I really think Moffo is one of the very best Violetta on record.

Thank you Bob for this historical gift
WOW, my friends….Jussi Björling as Manrico…is this great! I never thought one fine day I would listen to “my” Jussi in this role. My espectations were blown away. Without a doubt, after “THE” Manrico by Super-Mario Del Monaco, this is the most glorious one I have heard. And this in a Live-recording from 1941 (!!!)

HD-Vinyl (Mono) 24/96 (RCA) Giuseppe Verdi – Falstaff Highlights (Arturo Toscanini)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Bob – Georgia on my mind 😀
There have been countless recordings of Verdi’s last opera. Many excellent. For example, von Karajan (with Tito Gobbi), Solti (with Geraint Evans), Bernstein (with Fischer-Dieskau), Giulini (with Renato Bruson), and more recently Davis (with Michele Pertusi). And even an English version, Daniel (with Andrew Shore). And they all have their unique qualities.
However, the benchmark remains Toscanini’s recording in 1950 with the NBC Symphony Orchestra on the RCA label. The cast may not be perfect, although Valdengo offers a first-rate interpretation. He also sang Iago in Toscanini’s 1947 NBC broadcast of Verdi’s Otello. Herva Nelli and Nan Merriman , also in that classic recording, reappear here. All the members of the cast perform admirably, and the ensembles, a crucial ingredient in this opera, are most effective. Cloe Elmo, as Mistress Quickly, is especially notable.
