HD-Vinyl Mono 24/96 (EMI) Edward Grieg/Franz Liszt – Piano Concerti – György Cziffra

Many thanks to our friend Trottar for this gem
Hungarian born György Cziffra was one of the most celebrated virtuosos of the post-war decades in Europe, noted for his powers of improvisation as a Liszt pianist. The Grieg Concerto is typical of Cziffra’s ‘mercurial quality’ while the Liszt Concerto is very much in the style with which Liszt ‘loved to astonish his adoring audiences’.
Cziffra’s legendary virtuosity and near-superhuman work ethic tended to overshadow the inner turmoil of a man who suffered deeply under the Nazi oppression, and then later from the post-war Hungarian regime, which eventually drove him into exile.

Cziffra is and has always been a criminally neglected and underrated musician. His account is fresh, exciting, elegant and in no way inferior to any one in the world. In fact, he holds his own against any competition as far as the waltzes are concerned. One is tempted to actually dance to his reading of, say, the op. 69 valse, thereby reminding us of why these pieces were held by the composer to be waltzes, and not soothing lullabies. It should be strongly recommended for anyone interested in Chopin’s music.

Who else but Cziffra could play these transcriptions? When you hear him play for example the 5th dance, it seems he had wrote it himself. Cziffra’s technique permitted him to play everything like he wanted to play it, he had no difficulties, and, his interpretation was always interesting. He was a real musician, when he played ten times a piece on concert, it was ten times different, you had the impression to hear it for the first time.
