HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Johannes Brahms – The 4 Symphonies, Violin Concerto, Variation On A Theme By Haydn, 8 Hungarian Dances (Karajan, Ferras)

front-small-boxset
A marvellous collection of some of Brahms’ major works. The records are in excellent condition, unbelievable after +50 years…and they seem to be genuine 1st pressings although this box is a special edition that came few years later than the single releases.
I grew up with this recording of the Brahms Violin concerto, and It has remained my favorite: warm, dramatic, and thoroughly natural in approach, Ferras and von Karajan have a perfect grasp of this concerto.
While maybe not the greatest interpreter of Brahms, Karajan delivers very well in his recordings of the symphonies. All four symphonies have plenty of power and lyricism. The Berlin Philharmonic is excellent as always. If you like your Brahms in a melancholy mode, lushly recorded and nuanced to the max,(and I do!), these Brahms’ Symphonies are for you. Karajan’s approach to these four Symphonies is evoking a variety of emotions that few other recordings do. It’s a fine experience.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Richard Wagner – Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg (Karajan)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Trottar for this treasure
Despite his disdain for some of the sillier aspects of grand opera, H.L. Mencken once said that “Die Meistersinger” was the greatest single work of art of western civilization–and to many, his hyperbole is forgivable when one contemplates the well-crafted structure of this most human of Wagner’s music dramas. Of all recordings of Wagner’s sole comedy, this one under the baton of Karajan at his prime has perhaps the best-balanced cast. The clear, youthful tones of Donath in the role of Eva must be close to Wagner’s ideal for the role, while Adam makes a compassionate Sachs–though not quite as resonant as one would wish. Kollo’s impetuous style is appropriate to the character of the lovestruck Walther. The orchestral playing has the clarity and transparency that is the trademark of the Karajan style, perhaps most appropriate in this, Wagner’s happiest work.

Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/96 (MFSL/EMI) Peter Tchaikowsky – Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique” (Karajan)

front-small-boxsetThousand thanks to our friend Mats for this gem
I am in no doubt that this is one of Karajan’s greatest recordings. He recorded this bleakest of symphonies many times and there is undoubtedly merit in the 50’s versions with the Philharmonia and the VPO, and the two accounts made with the BPO for DG in the 60’s and 70’s, but for many the finest remains this 1971 recording, also with the BPO, made in the warm acoustic of the Jesus-Christus Kirche in September 1971. It was originally released on LP in quadrophonic sound; the violins are still a bit shrill but otherwise we hear a deep, golden acoustic ideally suited to the sound Karajan’s orchestra made back then.

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (MFSL) Debussy/ Ravel – La Mer/Prélude À L’après-midi D’un Faune/Boléro (Karajan)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to my friend Mats for this audiophile gift
What makes Karajan such a superb French conductor isn’t just precision and clarity, two virtues we associate with this genre, but his poetic imaginaiton. Where Boulez is crystalline and sparkling in La Mer, Karajan is romantic and delicate. He expresses the music in long sweeps of feeling, but each bar is full of color and nuance. As familiar as La Mer is, to go beyond mere scene-painting (wind, waves, foam, etc.) is difficult. To my ears, Karajan’s interpretation rises to the very top, but you must be able to open your ears to it, since this isn’t Munch-Ansermet-Boulez.

front-small-boxsetMany many thanks to Gabi79 for this precious gift
What do you get if you sing Verismo like Belcanto? Right, you get such beautiful pearls like this one. Leoncavallo’s and Mascagni’s short operas belong among the most popular works of the verismo . A great example of love, disappointment, betrayal, and death. Mascagni s beautiful music was made popular among opera novices through the Hollywood masterpiece “The Godfather III” . Leoncavallo’s sad and touching aria of Canio “Recitar, mentre preso dal delirio…” is one of the most beautiful arias in operatics.
