Brutal Hi-End HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Telarc) Stravinsky/Borodin – The Firebird – Ouverture and Polovetsian Dances from “Prince Igor” (Shaw)

The eternal question: Why does a digital recording sound much better, when played from vinyl, compared to the CD? Indeed, this is fact on almost all recordings. But in this case, Telarc used the full benefits of the master tapes (“only” 16 bit & 50 kHz its time), that were played in the full range, not beeing reduced to 44.1 kHz for the CD-norm. The HiFi-sound becomes a Hi-End-sound and you remain speechless and want to hear it again and again. Enjoy!

You are warned: take care of your amp and (more) of your speakers. Don’t play it too loud, until you know, how loud you can get it. Telarc’s timpani and bass drum are terrific!

Brutal Hi-End HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Telarc) Igor Stravinsky – Le Sacre Du Printemps (Maazel)

Compare this rip with the rip I posted with Maestro Karajan: both are beautiful performances, but when the HiFi-sound becomes a Hi-End-sound, you remain speechless and want to hear it again and again. Enjoy! Take care in the 2nd Part, after 7 minutes, when the “famous” eleven drum hits come to your ears.

You are warned: take care of your amp and (more) of your speakers. Don’t play it too loud, until you know, how loud you can get it. Telarc’s timpani and bass drum are terrific!

HD-Vinyl 24/192 (DGG) Igor Stravinsky – Le Sacre Du Printemps (Karajan)

While the Austrian maestro Herbert Von Karajan (mostly known for covering the Austro-German repertoire) may appear to be the wrong fit for Stravinsky’s mysterious and barbaric “Rite of Spring”, I’d contend that if this recording is a fair representation, Karajan’s Stravinsky has it’s merits. This recording of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” is bold and bright, with an on-point delivery that is dramatic and intense, and it is being played by an orchestra that is world class in it’s precision and polish. The DG sound is, of course, as clear as crystal. Given that, I’d ask, what more would you want? There may be others such as Bernstein, Monteux and Stravinsky himself who’d interpret this music with, perhaps, a more authentic feel of understanding for the composer’s intent, but, even so, Karajan doesn’t fail to put on a good show.

Mono HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Vladimir Horowitz – Recordings from 1930-1951

All thanks for this historic set go to Trottar
I give 5 stars for this boxset despite the old recording sound. Sound of piano itself is reasonably well for the day once you are used to the background noise, good enough to convey the subtlty and delicacy of his playing. Prokofiev’s Toccata is still fastest and most exciting on records, verging on super-human. Rachmaninov’s 3rd concerto is the best performance by Horowitz with more argency and intensity than his later recordings. The incandescent account of Liszt Sonata is one of the most compelling and beautiful along side Richter and Pogorelich’s classic accounts. Haydn and Scarlatti sonatas, Beethoven variations, Schumann’s Toccata, Chopin Etudes, Stravinsky’s Petrushka and so much more display Horowitz’ keen sense of tonal colours and mind blowing fluency of playing.

Composer: Domenico Scarlatti, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn, Francis Poulenc, Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy, Sergei Rachmaninov, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Franz Liszt, Frederic Chopin, Robert Schumann

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Igor Stravinsky – Pulcinella-Suite/Dumbarton Oaks/8 Instrumental Miniatures (Orpheus Chamber Orchestra)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend RifRaf for this rarity
It’s nice to hear the Pulcinella performed outside of its suite format, and this record offers the whole ballet score. I can’t compare it to other recordings, but the sound here is crisp and distinct, and the vocal soloists generally add to the vibrant harmonies of the small orchestra, rather than detract. Pulcinella is Stravinsky’s departure, so to speak, from his early modernist blockbusters like Rite and Petrushka, and his genesis in the neoclassical. A great piece of art.
The record also offers another of his later works, a piece that supposedly tried to emulate Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti, but seems to me more modernist than neoclassical. All in all, this is a good addition to Pulcinella.
The record closes by playing some of the original 18th century chamber music from which Stravinsky made his Pulcinella.
