HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Decca) Bela Bartok – Bluebeard’s Castle (in Hungarian) Ludwig, Berry, Kertesz

front-small-boxsetAll thanks for this go to our friend Jean-Luc
Bartók’s lone opera has fared well on disc, and the Kertész is one of the best, even if it lacks the full bite and snap of singers emoting in their native language. Ludwig, a mezzo Judith, is convincing as a loving bride wishing to share her husband’s innermost secrets, and Berry is a patient Bluebeard, saddened by her inevitable consignment to oblivion behind the seventh door. They capture the private, intimate horrors at the core of the story. Kertész conducts brilliantly, drawing full, warm sounds from the LSO aided by Decca’s spectacular demonstration-quality engineering. Doráti (on Mercury, also with great sound but with native singers) may get closer to the spirit of Bartók’s sharp-edged score, but Kertész is in the same league.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Antonin Dvorak – Requiem (Kertesz)

front_small_boxsetDvorak’s Requiem should be as well-known as those of Verdi, Brahms, Berlioz, and Mozart. Though it is not as tuneful as the Verdi, it is powerful, lyrical, and dramatic. This recording came out on LP in the early ’70s and has been hailed as the definitive one almost since it appeared. The sound is superb, and the newcomer to this music, on hearing this, is bound to wonder why this piece is not better-known. I wonder why every time I hear it.

HD-Vinyl 96/24 (Decca) Gioacchino Rossini – Stabat Mater (Kertesz)

front_small_boxset
Powerful soloists in bel canto voice render this recording, one to be remembered. Every phrase and idea sung coherently, without tendency toward “musical mush.” Have heard several other recordings that have disappointed both listener and choirister. I am always on the lookout for music that broadens my horizons, and this quirky and irresistable piece is a wonderful discovery. A bonus is hearing Pavarotti again!

The Schubert “Great” is a major enterprise compared to all that preceded it, and here Kertesz competes with Bruno Walter, Toscanini, Furtwangler, and Klemperer, to name only a few renowned conductors whose Ninths are acclaimed.
