From their webpage: “In its efforts to realize the concept of a ‘Living Museum,’ the Smithsonian Institution has launched a campaign to bring new dynamics to the place of music in the museum . . . It is our hope that through the offerings of the Smithsonian Collection of Recordings we are encouraging other museums to tear down the barricades that now stand between the musical artifacts in their collections, and the performers and listeners among their supporters. Similarly, we hope to encourage American musicians to broaden their knowledge of and expertise in the performance practices of the past.

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Smithsonian Institution) Johann Sebastian Bach – 3 Works For Solo Harpsichord (James Weaver)

front-small-boxset2
Many thanks for this beauty to our friend Booksaregood
Concerto in D-Minor After Marcello, BWV 974
Italian Concerto, BWV 971
French Ouverture, BWV 831
These are exceptionally fine readings by James Weaver, but the star of this show is the Wolf harpsichord. The sound captured here is simply the best and most beautiful harpsichord I have ever heard. It is a mystery why it is so difficult to record or capture the harpsichord qua instrument, as opposed to “ye olde” social statement, with its essence sounding pin-pointy lovely, without clatter.
Recorded 7-9 December 1987 in the National Museum of American History, Washington D.C.
