All thanks for this beauty go to Mats
Such classic 80’s recordings like this just don’t go out of style for the classical music lover. Masterful compositions from a truly towering composer and performed with equisite period artistry make this still a highly desirable recording. The vibrant and enthusiastic moods Pinnock and the English Concert produce would probably make Bach quite proud. The sound quality is extremely clear, bright and bold.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Telefunken) Johann Sebastian Bach – Three Sonatas For Flute And Cembalo (Nicolet, Richter)

Thank you very much Jean-Luc

If you’ve wandered here, you’re an Aurèle Nicolet fan. You can’t get enough of his recordings, think his playing has a unique beauty, and are thrilled to find out about the existence of this recording, but also frustrated to contemplate the fact that you will probably never find a copy for yourself. BWV 1020 is only hardly to find because the origin of J.S. Bach is questionable. Nice, that this recording still exists!

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Archiv) Johann Sebastian Bach – Three Motets (Regensburger Domspatzen)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Lemarquis for the sparrows
The Regensburger Domspatzen (Regensburg Cathedral Choir) is the official choir for the liturgical music at St Peter’s Cathedral in Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany. The choir consists of boys and young men only. The Domspatzen, literally “Cathedral Sparrows”, trace their origins back to the year 975 when bishop Wolfgang of Regensburg founded a cathedral school that – among other things – instructed boys to sing in the liturgy. The choir has seen various ups and downs during its more than 1,000-year history. In the 20th century, however, the Domspatzen became world-famous, especially through the achievement of the two directors who were to shape them over the course of 70 years: Theobald Schrems and Georg Ratzinger (brother of Pope Benedict XVI).

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG Archiv) Johann Sebastian Bach – Orchestral Works (Karl Richter)

front-small-boxset
Richter was considered to be somewhat of an old-school romantic by the auntentic instrumentation crowd back in the 70s and 80s. I thought similarly at the time, and even felt a little guilty for liking these recordings as much as I did. Now older (and presumably a little wiser), I’ve decided that Richter was, in many respects, ahead of his time. Richter’s tempos are mostly lively when compared to other Bach specialists of his generation. Some critics have complained of a certain rhythmic squareness and rigidity of phrasing in Richter’s performances, but to my ears those liabilities are more the exception than the rule. Usually, Richter is alive to the complexities and tensions in Bach’s music that rule out reductionistic interpretation.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (CBS) JSB – The Brandenburg Concerts (Walter/Wendy Carlos – Switched On Brandenburgs)

front-small-boxset
No less than Glenn Gould proclaimed, “Carlos’s realization of the Fourth Brandenburg Concerto is, to put it bluntly, the finest performance of any of the Brandenburgs–live, canned, or intuited–I’ve ever heard.”
This is a collection of all six of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos performed by
Wendy(Walter)Carlos on her Moog modular synthesizer. Concertos 1, 2, and 6 were recorded specifically for this album. Concertos 3, 4, and 5 had been previously released on Switched-On Bach, The Well-Tempered Synthesizer, and Switched-On Bach II respectively. The first movement of the Second Concerto had been recorded for the album By Request, released in 1975.
The Back-cover has a mis-print: The last Concerto is listed twice.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Hungaroton) Johann Sebastian Bach – Die Kunst der Fuge (Kocsis)

Many thanks to Trottar for the records
The Art of Fugue was J.S. Bach’s final composition which many justifiably regard as the apotheosis of his legacy. Kocsis is brilliant in his interpretations, the recordings are totally pure and clear. The technical command is flawless, and he has a complete idiomatic feeling for the music. The piano sound has lots of color and tonal variety, and there is nothing trivial in the playing of the pieces.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Columbia) Johann Sebastian Bach – St. Matthew Passion (Klemperer)

front-small-boxset All thanks for tis gem go to our friend Jean-Luc
The real test of greatness, both in content and in performance is the effect of repeated hearing–especially repeated hearing without focused concentration. After a while, both the art and the artistry of a recording like this make themselves felt in an undeniable way. Most important of all, the effect of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is to immerse the listener in the feelings and philosophies of an event that forms the foundation of western culture. This recording of the St. Matthew Passion captures all the feeling and emotion present in the Biblical passages upon which it is based. It is an excellent recording to use for study due to its extremely slow tempo. The tempo, however, unfortunately makes it rather tedious if you do not love the piece before listening to this recording. The final chorus, “Wir setzen uns,” is magnificently done, as is the opening chorus. The soloists are superb, and Klemperer certainly knows how to make one wait for a chord to resolve. All in all, it’s simply amazing.

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Philips) Daniel Chorzempa Plays Johann Sebastian Bach

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Mats for this beauty
Once I read, Digital has been discovered only and exclusively for church organ music. I tend to believe it. The Toccata and Fugue lends itself easily to misinterpretation. Having been used as the Big Dark Castle theme in every horror cartoon since 1925, its easy for it’s interpreters to take a bigger, faster, and louder approach to what could be so much more beautiful and restrained. Chorzempa’s interpretation is simply stunning, and possibly like no other version you’ve ever heard. He is able to bring emotion out of passages that you may not have even realized existed. He plays the opening motif in a way that is light, yet grand, and this seems to be his way of interpreting the whole of the piece. The most stunning passage is the second section, where he employs dream-like stop settings and creates a call-and-response interaction between soaring arpeggios. This is not a Toccata and Fugue based on fear and power, but on true yearning and emotion. Simply incredible.

Rare Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Smithsonian Institute) Johann Sebastian Bach – The Brandenburg Concerti – Smithsonian Institution

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Booksaregood for these gems
Truly a marvellous rendition of the Brandenburg Concerti. These recordings are excellent. Use original instruments of the period, recorded without the use of multiple microphones, which aides the intimate sound stage of the chamber music period and has nice presentation and decent liner notes.
Sonically, they are superb, with a simple, clean sound that will reward those who have their speakers set up correctly in their designated listening room. The Smithsonian even went thru the effort of not cutting the grooves too narrow for better sound quality and hence the reason for only five of the six albums having music on them. They also did NOT include “fodder” material ( non-Brandenburg ) to make up the last side.
Enjoy with a bottle of wine.
