HD-Vinyls 24/96 (RCA) Johannes Brahms – The Sonatas For Clarinet And Piano, Op. 120 (Stoltzman, Goode)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Trottar for these rare Sonatas

If you are a – ahem – “normal” clarinet player, then you are probably of the Daniel Bonade (Philadelphia)/Robert Marcellus (Cleveland) school of clarinet playing that abhors all vibrato outside of jazz. This is a shame, because, in the hands of a skilled artist, vibrato on a clarinet can be every bit as pleasant as it is on a flute or an oboe. That being the case, Richard Stoltzman offers us a recording here that is definitely “outside the box”. This is a Brahms Sonatas for the general public, not for clarinetists with preconceived notions. And I am very thankful, because he gives us here a performance that is wonderfully, refreshingly UNtraditional (from a clarinetist’s point of view). However, I suspect that Brahms would have been immensely pleased with this set. (I wonder, after all, would Brahms have disapproved of vibrato by a violist performing the viola transcriptions? I think not.)
For those of you who are not interested in “correct” clarinet playing, rest assured that you will hear playing that is wonderfully refined, tasteful, adventurous, playful, expressive, and heartfelt from two absolutely world-class, amazing artists at the height of their powers on this recording. Nobody should have the slightest hesitation about hearing this album except for, ahem, tradition-minded clarinetists.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (/Westminster/Speakers Corner) Johannes Brahms – Violin Concerto In D Major (Morini, Rodzinski)

front-small-boxset For most of her performing career which began in the 1920’s and ended in the early 1970’s, legendary violinist Erica Morini was billed as “The World’s Greatest Woman Violinist” a title she naturally despised. “I am either good or I am not” she responded when asked about it, “Being a woman has nothing to do with it!”. Today she is largely forgotten while several great women violinists have emerged in the last 30 years. Most of this neglect is due to the fact that almost all of her recordings have been unavailable for many years.

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (EMI) Johannes Brahms – Violin Concerto (Perlman/Giulini)

front-small-boxsetCarlo Maria Giulini (1914-2005) and Itzhak Perlman collaborated with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in this famous 1976 EMI recording. I have heard this criticized as having an overly slow Ist movement. Having listened to this, I do not find I overly slow, but rather a bit leisurely, giving the conductor, orchestra and soloist TIME to really interact and do some special touches with Brahms’ orchestration. II and III are definitely in the same league tempo wise, with many other recordings. The recorded sound is excellent and the Chicago Symphony plays with great authority and precision.

Super Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Foné) Il Cremonese Antonio Stradivari (Salvatore Accardo)

front-small-boxsetPlease welcome another  audiophile super-label: Fonè
I have read so much about the Italian super-label Fonè, so I thought, is time to hear the records, that so many HiFi lovers would never sell or give away. But I never expected it would be this hard to get the pearls that Signor Giulio Cesare Ricci (called Signoricci by the fans) produces, 100% analogue and very limited to 496 copies. Don’t ask me, why the hell 496 and not 500 😀  Finally I had luck and could get my hands on three of these black gold nuggets and….WOW ! My expectations weren’t disappointed.
Concerning this recording, I seldom heard the Stradivari as if it was played in my livingroom just for me. You can hear the violin breathing…
Audiophile factor: very high!

Rare HD-Vinyl (Mono) 24/96 (Erato) Johannes Brahms – Les Valses (Sebök)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Trottar for this rarity
The waltzes were written for piano four hands (i.e. duet), and were also arranged for piano solo by the composer, in two different versions – difficult and simplified. The three versions were published at the same time, and sold well, contrary to the composer’s expectations. The waltzes were written while the composer lived in Vienna, a city where he would permanently settle in 1872. They were intended as a tribute to the waltz dance form which had become especially fashionable in his adopted city. György Sebők was an internationally renowned pianist and Distinguished Professor at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana, USA. He was known worldwide as a soloist with major orchestras, a recitalist on four continents, a recording artist, and for his master classes, visiting professorships, and the Swiss music festival he organized in Ernen.

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Decca) Johannes Brahms – Hungarian Dances/Antonin Dvorak – Slavonic Dances (Reiner)

front-small-boxset
Thank you very much to our friend Jean-Luc for this joyous gem
This kind of music-making is simply magic. Fritz Reiner, who feels just at ease with the Hungarian Dances as he does with a Dvorak symphony, really puts his heart and mind in the music and gives us the best version of these works I have ever heard. Especially effective is the Hungarian Dance no. 6 in D major – if this music does not make you want to dance, then there is either something wrong with me or the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Philips) Brahms/Schumann – The Complete String Quartets (Quartetto Italiano)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Joediaprile for this gem
The quartet plays with simplicity, eloquence and with a lyrical tone that few can hope to match. Each of the movements is carefully crafted, and the playing is a window into the composer’s soul, as also the wonderful interplay between the members of the quartets. These are performances that combine eloquence and passion, and the sound quality is wonderful despite the intervening years. These performances are topnotch and set a standard that few even approach.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Johannes Brahms – 15 Hungarian Dances for Piano (Cziffra)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Trottar for this beauty
Who else but Cziffra could play these transcriptions? When you hear him play for example the 5th dance, it seems he had wrote it himself. Cziffra’s technique permitted him to play everything like he wanted to play it, he had no difficulties, and, his interpretation was always interesting. He was a real musician, when he played ten times a piece on concert, it was ten times different, you had the impression to hear it for the first time.
