Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (London) Sergej Rachmaninov – Piano Sonata No. 2 (Ashkenazy)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this gift go to Jean-Luc
Ashkenazy’s performance of the 2nd Rachmaninov sonata is much more gratifying than Horowitz’s, in part because he plays the earlier version of this piece.
The Etudes are fantastic, played with sensitivity and with those deliberate and well-thought out interpretations which make Ahskenazy such a wonderful performer. He’s also able to play with amazing voicing, making the entire set sound amazingly clear from top to bottom.

Rare HD-Vinyls 96/24 (Fidelio) Carlo Bergonzi – Neapolitan Songs

front-small-boxset
Just yesterday a user pointed my attention on a “Youtube” clip, the song “Dicitenciello vuje” sung by the fantastic Tito Gobbi. A great performance indeed…and I thought, I have this on vinyl, sung by Bergonzi…have I it or had I? OK, here is it. On searching for infos for this post I just discovered, Carlo died some weeks ago, aged 90 and my heart jumped into sadness. What a great tenor he was, surely among the greatest ever in “Belcanto”. Trained as a baritone but in 1950 came to the realisation that he may be a tenor and retrained. Although he performed and recorded some belcanto and verismo roles, he is above all associated with the operas of Giuseppe Verdi, including a large number of the composer’s lesser-known works that he helped revive.  R.I.P. Maestro!

HD-Vinyls 96/24 (Decca/London) Jaques Loussier Trio play BACH – Vol. 1,2,3,4,5

small-boxset
Bach goes Jazz
Bach’s works translate so well in other mediums. I have heard his stuff transcribed for harmonica to kazoo…and it always sounds fresh and as if it were meant for that specific media. These jazz transcription are “spot on”. Bach, as many will know, was especially renowned for his improvisational skills which would have been very apparent at this church. It is therefore fitting that Jacques Loussier, also known for his improvisational skills and especially as related to works of Bach, should perform this concert at the venue. Loussier’s superb touch on the piano and gift for arranging complicated classical pieces into light, though not lightweight, jazz renditions is simply sublime. All the pieces are familiar even to the untrained ear but will by no means short-change anyone in-the-know.

Get this oustanding and ultra-rare recording, before the world goes down

Reup because of Magda’s death.
The Italian soprano Magda Olivero, one of the most prominent interpreters of the Italian verismo operatic tradition whose career spanned 50 years, has died at 104.
The news agency ANSA said Olivero died Monday, Sept. 8th 2014 in a Milan hospital, where she was admitted after a stroke last month.
The Milan opera house La Scala, where Olivero debuted in 1938, honored her memory with a moment of silence before a performance on Monday. La Scala described Olivero’s voice as charismatic, her acting as formidable and her intelligence as “ready and cutting until the end”.
Olivero took a break from performing after her 1941 marriage, returning to the stage in 1958 in the title role of Adriana Lecouvreur at the urging of the opera’s composer Francesco Cilea. It became one of her most memorable roles.

Many thanks to our friend BOB for this beauty
I never quite realised how much I appreciate this recording until I saw Tebaldi singing “Suicidio!”. Her massive voice, which she was able to tune down when required and sing the warmest phrase, had matured by the mid 60s when she tackled the role on stage and made it ideal for this dangerous role. Combined with her commanding stage presence it’s no wonder she received such huge acclaim as Gioconda.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Vincenzo Bellini – I Puritani (Sutherland/Pavarotti/Bonynge)

front_small_boxsetMany thanks to our Bob for this fantastic gift
Maybe I get sentimental, when I get older and older, but I always send a kiss to heaven and cannot thank enough, if I can hear again the voices of Sutherland, Pavarotti, Ghiaurov and the music of Bellini. The sicilian wonder Bellini died too early (aged 34), but he conditioned and impressed the opera scene like no one other. His handful of operas are among the most beautiful you can find in the operatics world: Norma, I Capuleti E I Montecchi, La Sonnambula, Beatrice Di Tenda, I Puritani.

High-Definition Vinyls 96/24 (Decca) Giacomo Puccini – Manon Lescaut (Tebaldi/Del Monaco)

This is really a very good recording, one of the best. Renata Tebaldi was a perfect Manon; she could sing as an angel, but also with great passion (Sola, perduta, abbandonata). Mario del Monaco was one of the best Des Grieux’s, perhaps more heroic in some moments, but his voice was always under perfect control. Truly, a “tenore robusto”.

Face it. All the best opera recordings were made between the mid 50s and early 70s. Fortunate for us that the final golden age of opera singing coincided with the onset of high fidelity stereo recording. This Fanciulla is a golden age performance.
