HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Sir Neville Marriner & The Academy Of St. Martin-in-the-Fields

front-small-boxsetLife President of the Academy, Sir Neville Marriner began his career as a violinist, playing first in a string quartet and trio, then in the London Symphony Orchestra. It was during this period that he founded the Academy, with the aim of forming a top-class chamber ensemble from London’s finest players. Beginning as a group of friends who gathered to rehearse in Sir Neville’s front room, the Academy gave its first performance in its namesake church in 1958.

Farewell, Maestro Marriner. R.I.P. :(

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (CBS) Rudolf Serkin Live At Carnegie Hall

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Trottar for this gem
One of the greatest pianists of all time. His interpretations are deep and sound like the composers’ intentions. Anybody who heard and knew this Master knows that whatever he tackled is today embossed in the Temple of the finest, most honest, keyboard and chamber music ever recorded. No wonder he became Adolf Busch’s son-in-law. His “Republic of Equals” in Marlboro was never really a ‘Republic”–it was his Kingdom (but not Empire). Amazing how his son Peter carried forward this tradition of musical honesty and virtuosity…..

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (FSM) Ludwig van Beethoven – All Piano Sonatas (Brendel)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this marvellous set
Brendel is rightly considered an expert on Beethoven (Schubert and Mozart), because unlike many other “high-class” pianists who play only on speed, Brendel gives the listener the opportunity to enjoy Beethoven. Very clear and emotional, as one would expect for a romantic composers.

HD-Vinyl Mono 24/96 (Columbia) Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Sonatas No. 30 & 31 – Walter Gieseking

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Trottar for this gem
Everybody knows about Gieseking and Debussy, but for some reason I (and perhaps others) came late to the party featuring Gieseking and Beethoven. Silly me. What a great match. This is old world–perhaps best described as an older style of playing. Gieseking’s pianism and technical prowess is fabulous, but he puts greater emphasis on the soul, and the arc of each sonata. It fits like a glove, in my opinion.

HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Columbia) Ludwig van Beethoven – Complete Piano Trios (Istomin Stern Rose Trio)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this beautiful set
You would never disappointed by this acclaimed trio of pianist Eugene Istomin, violinist Isaac Stern and cellist Leonard Rose. This 5-LP set, recorded during the prime of the musicians, is such a historical record on Beethoven’s compositions. Stern’s violin is energestic and sharp as a knife, while Rose’s cello wraps the pieces up with a sweet but powerful way. Well, Istomin’s piano is somewhat lack of charisma, however, his sound is not buried under his great partners’ performances. Especially, the Trio, Op. 1, No.3, on the second disc, is a superb combination of the three. It is sad that the trio ended by the death of Leonard Rose in the 1980s. It could have been delightful if we were able to see the three musicians’ performances today.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (RCA Victrola) Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 5 (Reiner)

front-small-boxset
Thanks to our friend Lemarquis for this evergreen
Having collected a variety of Beethoven Symphony recordings over the years, incorporating a variety of interpretive approaches, I continue to enjoy this recording after all these years and lthought the sound is not the best. The sound opens up more, the brass have a burnished edge to them now. This is aggressive Beethoven, a valid approach to this monumental work. If you desire a more romantic and less assertive approach, there is always Giulini, Böhm or Bernstein to name a few, but I prefer this recording somewhat even to Kleiber’s celebrated VPO recording of the samesymphony. It’s an incredible value for the amount of music in such fine performances.
