HD-Vinyls Mono 24/96 (Cetra) Peter Tchaikowsky – Mazeppa (Olivero, Bastianini)

Many thanks to Budachris for this fine rarity
It’s in Italian, so what?
This is truly a magical performance, despite murky sound and being sung in Italian translation. Olivero embodies the role, her singing of the final lullaby will simply break your heart in two. Polari sings Andrei exquisitely. Christoff brings Slavic accents to his Italian portrayal of Kotchubey, entirely appropriate. What a joy to hear any bass role sung by such a voice! Bastiannini in the title role is his usual splendid self. Alas, the usual Italian 50s live-on-stage mono sound.
Adequately clear. But WHAT A PERFORMANCE!

HD-Vinyls Mono 24/96 (Melodram) Francesco Cilea – Adriana Lecouvreur (Olivero, Corelli)

Many thanks to Budachris for this fine rarity
I was never very interested in this opera (and I don’t remember, why, the hell…) although I am an opera lover. A friend, some +30 years ago, guided me through this work and so it was that I started to love “Adriana” and bought that friend’s version, the Decca one with Renata Tebaldi and Mario Del Monaco. Since then I love “Adriana”. This is a live performance from 1959 by two of my all time beloved singers: Magda Olivero and Franco Corelli. The sound here is acceptable, almost good. The cast is especially appealing in that it is Italian with the major roles taken by iconic stars in their prime. Beautiful and highly recommended. Also make sure to get the libretto that has a lot of historical information.

Rare HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Decca) Riccardo Zandonai – Three Scenes From Francesca Da Rimini (Olivero/Del Monaco)

Get this oustanding and ultra-rare recording, before the world goes down

Reup because of Magda’s death.
The Italian soprano Magda Olivero, one of the most prominent interpreters of the Italian verismo operatic tradition whose career spanned 50 years, has died at 104.
The news agency ANSA said Olivero died Monday, Sept. 8th 2014 in a Milan hospital, where she was admitted after a stroke last month.
The Milan opera house La Scala, where Olivero debuted in 1938, honored her memory with a moment of silence before a performance on Monday. La Scala described Olivero’s voice as charismatic, her acting as formidable and her intelligence as “ready and cutting until the end”.
Olivero took a break from performing after her 1941 marriage, returning to the stage in 1958 in the title role of Adriana Lecouvreur at the urging of the opera’s composer Francesco Cilea. It became one of her most memorable roles.
