HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Giacomo Puccini – Madame Butterfly (De Los Angeles/Björling)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Bob for this masterpiece
Certain recorded Butterflys are considered to be definitive, with Toti dal Monte, Maria Callas and Renata Scotto leading the pack. Because of the strong competition, this 1955 recording does not automatically come to mind as a classic Butterfly performance. That is too bad because Victoria de los Angeles, in her second recording of the opera, is wonderfully natural in the title role. While she may not plumb the depths of the part in the way that some other sopranos have, her voice, while still carrying the drama and Butterfly’s pathos, sounds more youthful than that of many of her competitors.
I think this was Jussi Björling’s last complete opera recording; it may well be one of his best. His aristocratic style is just as valid as the more impetuous interpretation of Giuseppe di Stefano, De Los Angeles’ first recorded Pinkerton.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giacomo Puccini – La Bohème (Freni/Gedda/Schippers)

front-small-boxset1000 thanks to our friend Bob for this precious gift
For me this Mimí of 1964 is better than the Decca-Mimí of 1973, with Pavarotti…and she is terrific fantastic in that release. All singers here could have been “only” decent, the orchestra too and the maestro too…I would have bought it anyway, 1000 times again and again, alone for beautiful Mirella and her fresh, angelic voice. People, get it, you never find a better Mirella Freni.

Rare Vinyls 16/44 (HRE) Umberto Giordano – Fedora (Tebaldi/Di Stefano)

Incredible finding in a flea market – Near Mint –  for 50 Cents
This is probably one of the MOST pirated recordings by Renata Tebaldi. First of all, because she NEVER recorded the role, second because of the tremendous work by Di Stefano. Basile’s conducting is superb, and this opera has many fascinating musical moments, it’s no wonder so many wish Renata had recorded this role. This is the ONLY extant recording of Tebaldi in this role, at least until, or if, the Chicago performances with Bjorling ever surface. Do yourself a favor, get this, even when the sound is not HiFi (Live).

This is one of the best Andrea Chenier I have ever heard. Only Mario Del Monaco comes easily along to contend this role to the exceptional voice of Corelli. The entire production is wonderful! I recommend it very highly.
