HD-Vinyls 24/96 (CBS) Maurice Ravel – Complete Works For Solo Piano (Entremont)

Many thanks to Trottar for this gem
Philippe Entremont was born in Reims to musical parents, his mother being a Grand Prix pianist and his father an operatic conductor. Philippe first received piano lessons from his mother at the age of six. His father introduced him to the world of chamber and orchestral music. He studied in Paris with Marguerite Long, and entered the Conservatoire de Paris. He won prizes in sight-reading at age 12, chamber-music aged 14, and piano at 15. He became Laureat at the international Long-Thibaud Competition at the age of 16. In the following year he won a prize in the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels, and then began his career of serious concert-giving at the piano.

HD-Vinyl 24/192 (DGG) Martha Argerich & Claudio Abbado – Complete Concerto Recordings (6 x 180g Remastered Vinyls)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Urbanox for this stunning box
With this special edition DG pays tribute to an extraordinary musical partnership. The 6LP box set collects all the concerto recordings made by pianist Martha Argerich with conductor Claudio Abbado over more than 45 years. Their final meeting on stage took place at the Lucerne Festival at Easter 2013, where they performed two Mozart concertos. This special occasion was recorded, and the release was not only highly praised but is also Deutsche Grammophon’s most successful release of 2014 so far.
Martha Argerich and Claudio Abbado got to know each other through Friedrich Gulda, with whom they both studied in the late 1950s. Their close collaboration in the studio began in 1967 with Argerich’s brilliant concerto-debut release of the Prokofiev Third and Ravel G major. Each recording since then has been a success, as much with the critics as on a commercial level.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Franck, Debussy, Ravel – Violin Sonatas (Mintz, Bronfman)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this fine music go to
Trottar
The three works make a very attractive and logical coupling, as they bring together the three outstanding French sonatas of their time. The Franck, the work of a mature composer towards the end of his composing life is dated 1886, the Debussy sonata from 1917 was his last completed work and Ravel’s sonata of 1927, while not being his last work, is still one of his mature years.
Beyond those considerations the three works inhabit very different worlds from each other. The Ravel piece is by far the most ‘abstract’ in its musical considerations while the Franck offers a deeply Romantic vision. The Debussy sonata inhabits a world somewhere in between with its impressionist form of expression.
The performances given by Mintz and Bronfman are exquisitely drawn with clearer lines and less heaviness than is often heard with other artists. Those who are familiar with Mintz’s equally exquisite and finely drawn disc of the Prokofiev violin concertos recorded with Abbado will immediately know what is meant by that description. Nothing is overstated but every detail is there to be heard and makes full impact. Rather like make use of a sabre rather than a two-handed double edged sword to make an analogy.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Eterna) Modest Mussorgsky – Pictures At An Exhibition/Night On Bald Mountain (Markevitch)

front-small-boxset
Igor Markevitch always had by this piece a very special affinity, having therefore an absolute domain of its whole significance; as a matter of fact, every time he conducted this hyper known work he added new, smart and significant details of expression, that enriched and ennobled still more the status of this composition. Markevitch directed this performance with dark poetry (The catacombs, and Baba Yaga), zealous and almost imperceptible accents carefully sculpted in the score.
This version to my mind must be included among the most pyramidal readings ever made. You will not find optimistic brightness, or radiant expressiveness, but a fervent Elegy in memory of Victor Hartman. So, please, take into account this memorable choice at the moment you demand a major and even most penetrating result.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Maurice Ravel – Piano Concerto In G Major / Piano Concerto In D Major For The Left Hand (François/Cluytens)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Rumpwagger for this beauty
Samson François (1924-1970) is considered one of the most important French pianists of the 20th century. His unique sense of improvisation, which is the trademark of his recordings, blossomed even more in concert. Those who had the chance to attend his concerts recall a very special experience.
Precisely why he’s is not better known in the United States (or known at all for that matter) is a mystery. On this album he plays Ravel with absolute mastery, refusing to prettify any of the jazz rhythms in the G major concerto, and by so doing, bringing out all of its toughness…..

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Decca) Modest Mussorgsky – Pictures From An Exhibition (CSO/Solti)

front-small-boxsetDon’t be surprised by the title…even myself, I always thought, it is “at” and not “from”…but the correct translation from Russian is “from”. Anyway, this is another outstanding performance of the “Pictures”, that I omissed to post all the time.
Now it’s time to knee down in front of Maestro Solti. One of the better full orchestral Pictures to be found! Full of passion and energy. Solti, the Chicago Symphony, and the London engineers bring out all the color and life in this great piece. The combination with a delightful performance of Le Tombeau de Couperin is a good match. Couldn’t be better! Highly recommended!

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Debussy, Ravel – String Quartets (Quartetto Italiano)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this beauty
The members of the Quartetto Italiano were together for so long that you can get a historic mono recording of the smae music on EMI. The Quartetto doesn’t try to sound airy, diaphanous, or particularly French. Instead, they give a presonal, uniquely phrased version that sounds as if each player is esponding from deep feelings about the music. That’s rare in performances of Debussy and Ravel, where the syle is more or less locked in. the miking is quite close, and although they lack the sheen of the Bertg Qt, the Quartetto Italiano deserves their reputaiton for making beautiful sounds.
