HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Telefunken) Maurice Ravel – Piano Works (Noel Lee)

front-small-boxsetThank you Trottar for these great vinyls
Noël Lee (December 25, 1924 – July 15, 2013) was an American classical pianist and composer living in Paris, France.
Born in 1924 in Nanjing, China, Lee studied music in Lafayette, Indiana, then attended Harvard University, studying with Walter Piston, Irving Fine, and Tillman Merritt and was also a student at the Longy School of Music in the early 1940s. Following World War II, he traveled to Paris where he studied music with Nadia Boulanger and was a friend of Douglas Allanbrook. He composed orchestral, chamber, piano, vocal, and film music. In addition, he completed several unfinished piano works by Franz Schubert, and composed cadenzas for piano concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. He was also well known for his piano accompaniment.

Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/192 & 16/44 (Tacet) Maurice Ravel – oreloB (Bolero & La Valse)

front-small-boxsetThis is a crazy “thing” I tell you…I never saw this before. Normally you start listening a record positioning the needle at the beginning, in the outer dead wax. Here you start the record positioning the needle in the inner dead wax 😀 As stated on the cover, you play this Ravel backwards.
Much more than just a gimmick, this album boasts outstanding sound quality and stellar performances. See the information from the label below for more details on the production. (Many thanks to TheNightOwl, who allows me to use his text)

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Telarc) Modest Mussorgsky – Pictures At An Exhibition (Maazel)

front-small-boxset
A heartly “thank you” to our friend Mats for this gift
Ihmo this is one of the very very few performances (if not the only one) that comes very close to the millenium-recording by Fritz Reiner from 1958. Perfect in any way: tempi, coordination, dramatical atmosphere, sound. Don’t ask me why a digital production, presumably made with 16bit/44.1kHz technology, sounds ways better from vinyl than from CD. I don’t know. Try and believe.

There’s no such thing as too many versions of Pictures at an Exhibition, right?

Surprisingly deep bass on this album – timid woofers beware!

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (MFSL) Debussy/ Ravel – La Mer/Prélude À L’après-midi D’un Faune/Boléro (Karajan)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to my friend Mats for this audiophile gift
What makes Karajan such a superb French conductor isn’t just precision and clarity, two virtues we associate with this genre, but his poetic imaginaiton. Where Boulez is crystalline and sparkling in La Mer, Karajan is romantic and delicate. He expresses the music in long sweeps of feeling, but each bar is full of color and nuance. As familiar as La Mer is, to go beyond mere scene-painting (wind, waves, foam, etc.) is difficult. To my ears, Karajan’s interpretation rises to the very top, but you must be able to open your ears to it, since this isn’t Munch-Ansermet-Boulez.

Brand new vinyl, played here for the 1st time
Ladies and Gentlemen, here is the mother of all „Pictures“ recordings. At today, no other „Pictures“ production was able to beat Maestro Reiner and his Chicago Symphony Orchestra: good speed, real dramatical atmosphere, perfect tempo and a magnificent sound. This Analogue Productions Reissue on 200g is the best sounding version I ever heard.
