HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Decca) Modest Mussorgsky – Pictures From An Exhibition (CSO/Solti)

front-small-boxsetDon’t be surprised by the title…even myself, I always thought, it is “at” and not “from”…but the correct translation from Russian is “from”. Anyway, this is another outstanding performance of the “Pictures”, that I omissed to post all the time.
Now it’s time to knee down in front of Maestro Solti. One of the better full orchestral Pictures to be found! Full of passion and energy. Solti, the Chicago Symphony, and the London engineers bring out all the color and life in this great piece. The combination with a delightful performance of Le Tombeau de Couperin is a good match. Couldn’t be better! Highly recommended!

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Hyperion) Modest Mussorgsky – Pictures At An Exhibition (Wills)

front-small-boxsetAs far as I know there if only one adaption for organ of the most beloved classical work in the world, Mussorgsky’s “Pictures”, that everyone  should own: that one by Jean Guillou. Unfortunately only available on CD.
I stumbled by accident on this vinyl, one fine day, when I was looking for something different on the web and bought it in 1 second. I hoped not to be disappointed. Indeed it is a different but also phantastic adaption by Arthur Wills at the organ of the Ely Cathedral.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Modest Mussorgsky – Boris Godunov (Christoff/Cluytens)

front-small-boxset
Thank you very much for this terrific masterpiece to our friend from Lake Michigan
This version is badly cut,and purists may sneer at the Rimsky-Korsakoff arrangement, but it has two things going for it. The first thing is Boris Christoff. The second thing is Boris Christoff. (He sings three roles in this recording, which is a little confusing, but what the heck!) Christoff, with a rich and powerful bass-baritone, was one of the 20th century’s leading exponents of the role of Boris Godunov. He is simply a force of nature in the title role, yet with the ability to shade his voice into heartrending beauty and sorrow. The rest of the cast is excellent. Andre Cluytens conducts with a terrific mix of power and sensitivity, and the quality of the recording is quite good. While this may not be everybody’s first choice, it belongs on every opera lover’s shelf simply because it gives us the chance to hear one of the greatest bass-baritones of the century in his signature role.

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Telarc) Modest Mussorgsky – Pictures At An Exhibition (Maazel)

A heartly “thank you” to our friend Mats for this gift
Ihmo this is one of the very very few performances (if not the only one) that comes very close to the millenium-recording by Fritz Reiner from 1958. Perfect in any way: tempi, coordination, dramatical atmosphere, sound. Don’t ask me why a digital production, presumably made with 16bit/44.1kHz technology, sounds ways better from vinyl than from CD. I don’t know. Try and believe.

front-small-boxset
Almost no post-processing, so you can say, this rip is raw…and has a better DR (12)
Brand new vinyl, played here for the 1st time
Ladies and Gentlemen, here is the mother of all „Pictures“ recordings. At today, no other „Pictures“ production was able to beat Maestro Reiner and his Chicago Symphony Orchestra: good speed, real dramatical atmosphere, perfect tempo and a magnificent sound. This Analogue Productions Reissue on 200g is the best sounding version I ever heard.

Although he never received the publicity accorded to some more famous conductors, Carlo Maria Giulini was equal to, or better than, all such “star” conductors. In fact, Giulini was quite simply one of the half dozen or so greatest conductors of the 20th century.
