Piggybacking on Alf’s recent Brendel posts..

For those not familiar with Brendel, his mastery of the keyboard is at a level that few will ever be able to reach. Here, though back in 1982, Brendel has already “owned” the works, playing each Mozart work with fluidity, precision, and smooth sonority. Brendel’s playing is a delight, and that is true regardless of how many other recordings you might have of the Mozart piano concertos.

The recording here by Philips is very good, and the trademark smooth and rich Philips recording characteristics are in full play. It is unlikely you’ll have much, if any at all, issues with the technical aspects of the recording itself.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Philips) WAM – Piano Concerti 11 & 16 (Alfred Brendel/Neville Marriner)

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for these additional concerts
The Brendel/Mozart recordings were highly esteemed at the time of their original release and have more or less been in circulation ever since. Although Brendel made new recordings of several of the concertos with Charles Mackerras, I haven’t heard them and don’t know if they’re preferable or merely supplemental to those in this package. Frankly, after having heard these marvellous performed recordings, I can hardly believe they are better in any way.

I think these words from Brendel himself will give listeners some insight into his approach to Mozart: …..

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Joseph Haydn – The Nelson Mass – (Marriner)

front-small-boxset
Thank you Jean-Luc for this gem
The “Missa in Angustiis” (Mass for troubled times) or Nelson Mass (Hob. XXII/11), is one of fourteen masses written by Joseph Haydn. It is one of the six masses written near the end of his life which are, together, now seen as a culmination of Haydn’s liturgical composition. Haydn’s chief biographer, H. C. Robbins Landon, has written that this mass “is arguably Haydn’s greatest single composition”. Written in 1798, it is one of the six late masses by Haydn for the Esterhazy family composed after taking a short hiatus, during which elaborate church music was inhibited by the Josephinian reforms of the 1780s. The late sacred works of Haydn are masterworks, influenced by the experience of his London symphonies. They highlight the soloists and chorus while allowing the orchestra to play a prominent role.

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Argo) Antonio Vivaldi – La Stravaganza (Marriner)

front-small-boxset
Thank you very much Jean-Luc for this jewel

I doubt anyone reading this, regardless of how long or little a classical music listener or collector, would include Englishman Neville Marriner among his or her list of great conductors of any of the modern, romantic, classical or baroque eras. Yet, Marriner gracefully conducted music from all those times in recordings for Decca/London, many of which remain alive and in circulation today. I would make an argument that none of his recordings — and he has many great ones — are better than this recording of Antonio Vivaldi’s dozen violin concertos collectively known as Op, 4 and La Stravaganza.

Farewell, Maestro Marriner. R.I.P. :(

R.I.P Maestro Marriner…

Handel’s concertos are one of the pinnacles of the Baroque concerto grosso, displaying a wealth of musical invention and enormous variety of instrumental sonorities.

These 3 albums were originally released individually.

This is another audiophile gem with the dream-team Romero/Marriner/Academy.
Why aren’t all music catalogs made of this quality? Anyway. The renditions are musically very satisfying and the works are pretty well-known. You can’t go wrong on these interpretations. Very tastefully treated though. Just one of those discs that I intend to listen to over and over again.

Farewell, Maestro Marriner. R.I.P. :(

This is another audiophile gem with the dream-team Romero/Marriner/Academy.
Maestro, Sensei, however you want to say it, Pepe Romero is one of the great artists of our time. Each note is a jewel that he performs with such life that you feel your heart beating to his rhythm. This is the 2nd great Guitar Concerto by blind Rodrigo.
Any devotee of Classical Guitar music, who is not aware of Giuliani’s work, is truly missing something!!! Giuliani sure must have studied Mozart. If you like Mozart (and who doesn’t), you will like Giuliani.
