Many thanks to our friend Lemarquis for the vinyl
Everything Charles Rosen has recorded is informed with his pristine clear technique and a sharp mind driving the fingers. No swooning here but lots to admire in his Chopin and Liszt.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – All Works For Violin And Orchestra (Szeryng)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to
Jean-Luc for this treasure

Mozart’s violin concertos, although written when he was only 19, are among his finest works. And no violinist is more suited to do do justice to these masterpieces than Henryk Szeryng. Szeryng — although not as famous as some others — was one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. Although he excelled in a wide range of repertoire — from Vivaldi through Sibelius — Szeryng’s beautiful sweet tone and elegant performance style were especially effective in the performance of Mozart. I’m almost tainted to say: no other violinist I’ve heard excels him in this repertoire. He was the consummate Mozart violinist, as these recordings attest. Highly recommended.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (RCA) Giacomo Puccini – Tosca (Price/Domingo/Milnes)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Bob for this beauty
There are so many good and very good “Toscas” out there, that you have only the embarrassement of choice. I used to own back in the 90s not less than 15 different releases on vinyl/CD/Video. Now only 6 and among them this one on CD, only and exclusively because of the most malefic Baron Scarpia you can imagine, even more terriffic than on a later Decca release, with Freni and Pavarotti. Sherrill Milnes is, after magnificent and legendary Tito Gobbi, the pure evil called Scarpia. Not at least, Leontyne Price (1st black opera singer, who became a superstar) and a young Placido Domingo are marvellous in their roles. Maestro Mehta shows here that he was born for conducting operas, forcing musicians and singers to give their best. Absolutely RECOMMENDED!!!!

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Vincenzo Bellini – I Capuleti E I Montecchi (Sills/Baker/Gedda)

front-small-boxset
Many many thanks to our friend Bob for this great and rare pearl

Bellini’s opera “I Capuleti E i Montechi” is unfortunately overshadowed by the more famous Charles Gounod French opera Romeo et Juliette. This Italian bel canto work is rarely staged and even rarely recorded. It’s a pity really because this is a terrific opera, even if highly edited and even if Bellini tinkered with the play. It’s a gem of bel canto opera, full of beautiful melodies, dramatic passions and arias and ensembles that are linked together like a chain of gold. It is a glorious opera when it is performed by the right singers. Recorded in the late 60’s, it stars soprano Beverly Sills and mezzo soprano Janet Baker, both at the height of their powers as singers. In the tenor role (not that of Romeo, but Tebaldo) is Nicolai Gedda.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Ludwig van Beethoven – The Five Piano Concertos (Barenboim/Klemperer)

front-small-boxsetAlthough my four sets of Beethoven’s Concertos (Pollini, Kempff, Katchen, Arrau)  and Michelangeli’s 1st, 3rd and 5th, are the best I could find, there’s a grandeur in these performances that never crosses the line into clumsy heaviness, and in a strange way force coexists with suppleness. The Fantasia is a piece I fell in love with from the moment I heard it. This late 1960s recording of the Beethoven Piano Concertos is one of the best, and an interesting contrast: the young, brilliant pianist Barenboim with the elderly condcutor Klemperer.

HD-Vinyl 24/192 (EMI) Carl Orff – Carmina Burana (Frühbeck De Burgos)

This copy seems to be a promotional one, because of a sticker on the rear cover, “telling” that this is “Manufacturers Property Not For Sale”.
This recording was made shortly after Frühbeck de Burgos had lead the piece in concert with the New Philharmonia. The performance, which he conducted from memory, was hailed as a breakthrough in nuanced yet sometimes barbaric intensity. The chorus and soloists gave Frühbeck de Burgos everything he asked for in this recording. I highly recommend this recording.
