Mono HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Vladimir Horowitz – Recordings from 1930-1951

All thanks for this historic set go to Trottar
I give 5 stars for this boxset despite the old recording sound. Sound of piano itself is reasonably well for the day once you are used to the background noise, good enough to convey the subtlty and delicacy of his playing. Prokofiev’s Toccata is still fastest and most exciting on records, verging on super-human. Rachmaninov’s 3rd concerto is the best performance by Horowitz with more argency and intensity than his later recordings. The incandescent account of Liszt Sonata is one of the most compelling and beautiful along side Richter and Pogorelich’s classic accounts. Haydn and Scarlatti sonatas, Beethoven variations, Schumann’s Toccata, Chopin Etudes, Stravinsky’s Petrushka and so much more display Horowitz’ keen sense of tonal colours and mind blowing fluency of playing.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Mussorgsky//Rimsky-Korsakov/Borodin – Pictures At An Exhibition/Capriccio Espagnole/Polovetsian Dances (Muti/Roshdestwensky)

front-small-boxset
You can always count on Riccardo Muti to give a strong performance of popular works. His performance of Mussorgsky’s masterpiece is near the top. His tempi for the various “pictures” are right on. Muti’s performance is excellent and he has the sound to carry it off, but the reading does lack the oomph of others like Reiner and especially Ormandy (the earlier recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra on Columbia/Sony). Muti begins Pictures as though he is warming up, with the latter pictures much more highly charged than those in the first half. By the time he arrives at The Great Gate of Kiev he and the Philadelphia Orchestra are in full swing. It’s a top-notch performance.
Gennady Rozhdestvensky’s recordings of the “Polovetsian Dances” by Borodin and The “Capriccio Espagnole” by Rimsky-Korsakov are powerful and impeccable interpretations and good companions to Mussorgsky’s “pictures”.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Eterna) Modest Mussorgsky – Pictures At An Exhibition/Night On Bald Mountain (Markevitch)

front-small-boxset
Igor Markevitch always had by this piece a very special affinity, having therefore an absolute domain of its whole significance; as a matter of fact, every time he conducted this hyper known work he added new, smart and significant details of expression, that enriched and ennobled still more the status of this composition. Markevitch directed this performance with dark poetry (The catacombs, and Baba Yaga), zealous and almost imperceptible accents carefully sculpted in the score.
This version to my mind must be included among the most pyramidal readings ever made. You will not find optimistic brightness, or radiant expressiveness, but a fervent Elegy in memory of Victor Hartman. So, please, take into account this memorable choice at the moment you demand a major and even most penetrating result.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Columbia) Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov – Schherazade (Bernstein)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
Many do not like Bernstein because of the dramatization he placed in the NYPO recordings. For a piece such as this, that drama brings out the real story behind the orchestration – Scheherezade entertaining her master, and thus saving her life, with wonderful stories. This recording from a few years ago is very good, if a little fast in Lenny’s interpretation. Wonderful music. Unfortunately there is a little “technical” error in the performance of the 4th pmovement. Do you hear it? Can you guess it? Keyword is: Cymbals at 7:20

Brand new vinyl, played here for the 1st time
Ladies and Gentlemen, here is the mother of all „Scheherazade“ recordings. At today, for more than half a century, no other production was able to beat Maestro Reiner and his Chicago Symphony Orchestra: good speed, real dramatical atmosphere, perfect tempo and a magnificent sound. This Analogue Productions Reissue on 200g is the best sounding version I ever heard.

This one is an experiment, and as such, I would like your feedback. I’ve been using iZoTope RX2 as part of my workflow for quite some time now and figured it was time to try using the newer version – RX3.

This particular rip has been hanging around for quite some time. The album was in less than stellar condition (contrary to what was advertised when I bought it), and so I never got around to processing it.

This post was cleaned up using nothing but RX3 (manually, of course) and overall, I’m pretty pleased with the way it came out – especially considering the condition it was in when I started. Hopefully, the good folks at Speakers Corner will get around to releasing this at some point.

Until then, hope you enjoy this rip…
