HD-Vinyl 24/96 (RCA) Rachmaninov – Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini – Liszt, Piano Concerto No. 2 (Van Cliburn)

Many thanks to Janicius for this gift
Recognition in Moscow propelled Cliburn to international prominence. The first International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958 was an event designed to demonstrate Soviet cultural superiority during the Cold War, after the USSR’s technological victory with the Sputnik launch in October 1957. Cliburn’s performance at the competition finale of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 on April 13 earned him a standing ovation lasting eight minutes. When it was time to announce the winner, the judges were obliged to ask permission of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to give first prize to an American. “Is he the best?” Khrushchev asked. “Then give him the prize!” Cliburn returned home to a ticker-tape parade in New York City, the only time the honor has been accorded a classical musician. HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Columbia) Grieg, Piano Concerto A-Minor – Rachmaninov, Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini (Entremont/Ormandy)

Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
In the 1950s and 60s, CBS/Columbia (now Sony Classical) had the great fortune to have three of America’s best orchestras and their conductors on its recording roster — Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. More than a half-century later, only Leonard Bernstein remains a name that even the non-classical music world knows well. This particular disc features Ormandy and the Philadelphians with the great pianists Philippe Entremont (he was 23 years old on recording this in 1958) on the Grieg Piano Concerto, that’s often accompained by Rachmaninov’s “Paganini-Rhapsody”. When it comes to the “Rhapsody”, it will has to be either Curzon on Decca or this recording made decades ago. Just by knowing the orchestra (long considered the nation’s finest at the time) and the conductor (a major virtuoso to many critics), as well as the splendid performance on the piano, explains a lot of it.
Go ahead and look for others, but I definitely recommend this.

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Columbia) Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Concerto No. 4 (Ormandy/Serkin)

Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this masterpiece
Anyone who thinks Ormandy was the purveyor of the hearts and flowers of “The Philadelphia Sound” and not much else should be compelled to hear this Beethoven 4 with Serkin. It is truly one of the great 4ths; lyrical, unrushed, affectionately rendered, but with no indulgences at all. Serkin loved this concerto with every fiber of his being, but played no games with it. And–make no mistake–he was accompanied by a master. Of the many versions Serkin recorded during his life, this is surely the one to get.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Mussorgsky//Rimsky-Korsakov/Borodin – Pictures At An Exhibition/Capriccio Espagnole/Polovetsian Dances (Muti/Roshdestwensky)

front-small-boxset
You can always count on Riccardo Muti to give a strong performance of popular works. His performance of Mussorgsky’s masterpiece is near the top. His tempi for the various “pictures” are right on. Muti’s performance is excellent and he has the sound to carry it off, but the reading does lack the oomph of others like Reiner and especially Ormandy (the earlier recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra on Columbia/Sony). Muti begins Pictures as though he is warming up, with the latter pictures much more highly charged than those in the first half. By the time he arrives at The Great Gate of Kiev he and the Philadelphia Orchestra are in full swing. It’s a top-notch performance.
Gennady Rozhdestvensky’s recordings of the “Polovetsian Dances” by Borodin and The “Capriccio Espagnole” by Rimsky-Korsakov are powerful and impeccable interpretations and good companions to Mussorgsky’s “pictures”.

Super HD-Vinyl 192/24 (Telarc) Camille Saint-Saens – (Organ)Symphony No. 3 (Ormandy/Murray)

front-small-boxset
Revisited – complete new rip (2016) in 24/192 with the Black Bird Gang.
Pay Attention on track four: Sub Bass – take care of your equipement (Amp & Speakers)

Enjoy the beauty, the purity and the sheer “Grandezza” of a perfect recording. Without any doubt, this is sonically and performancing a masterpiece. Made in 1980, the sound (from an unusual venue for the Philadelphia Orchestra, the St. Francis de Sales Church) remains “State Of The Art” 36 years later. It is, arguably, one of the very best recordings of the Philadelphia Orchestra ever made, irrespective of repertoire.
