HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) JS Bach/WA Mozart – Concerti For Two Pianos (Haskil/Anda)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Jean-Luc for this rarity
These Concerti for Two Hands are light, fresh and vibrant in spite of the 1950s recording. I can never recommend this disk too much.
Philips, DG, EMI et al erred badly in not procuring a Mozart concerto-cycle from Haskil. She did know all of the Mozart concertos

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Columbia) Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 9 (Klemperer)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this beatiful vinyl
If you haven’t heard this ninth or its live counterpart, you haven’t heard Beethoven’s ninth at its very best. The difference consists partly in the fact that Klemperer lets the trombones and percussion play as they should, according to the score – i.e. clearly audible. Most other conductors tend to ignore this. On the present recording, the result is just amazing. The recording quality is very fine, despite its age. It is far better than many other, later recordings (e.g., Karajan’s). Compared with the live version from Testament.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI Columbia) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Symphonies No. 25 + 40 (Klemperer)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this
Klemperer reportedly called himself an amoralist, contrasting himself to Bruno Walter, whom he referred to as a moralist. In many Klemperer performances, I can hear why Klemperer thought of himself that way, but these are such warm, graceful performances. There’s nothing of the amoralist about them. Yet I wouldn’t say that they’re romantic or especially emotional performances. Nothing sounds clinical or dry here.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – La Traviata (Scotto, Kraus, Bruson, Muti)

front-small-boxsetMany many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this precious gift
What Muti does in the party scene in the 1st act is unbelievable. His fast tempos fits extremely well. Scotto’s voice is, of course, quite different from Votto’s recording. I am very found of Scotto’s freshness on that recording. She went through this highly difficult score with an apparent easiness that is admirable. On this recording, she is more dense (her tone reminds me Cortubas or maybe it is vice-versa). Nevertheless, it is a wonderful accomplishment. Kraus sounds very similar as his Duke in the Rigoletto recording with Beverly Sills. Incredible fresh voice for his age. Bruson is okay. That duet on the second act is so beautiful that it is very hard to mess up.
Brand new box&vinyls, played here for the very 1st time.

HD-Vinyl 96k24b (EMI) Leos Janacek – Sinfonietta/Taras Bulba (Rattle)

front-small-boxsetReposted with FF links
If you ever wanted to know, where “Emerson, Lake & Palmer” took the melody of their “Knife Edge” from…
Apparently Janacek never composed a classical symphony. “Taras Bulba” is a kind of symphonic folk-epic in three movements, a dramatic program piece based on scenes from Gogol’s novella of the same title. The historic Taras Bulba, depicted factually by Gogol, was a Cossack nationalist, a hero in the rebellion against the Poles. Janacek was something of a pan-Slavic nationalist himself, with a lifelong reverence for Russia; his “Taras Bulba” was composed to memorialize the massacre of Russians in World War 1. The “Sinfonietta” was also conceived as a tribute to heroic soldiers, specifically the Czech Armed Forces, to whom it was dedicated. It began as a trumpet fanfare for a Sokol gymnastic festival in 1926; the trumpets ring out boldly in all five movements.

Reposted – now with FF links
These „Pictures“ are not, as you may think, orchestrated by Ravel, but by Vladimir Ashkenazy. A little bit different, here and there, as in the Ravel orchestration, but a really fantastic work.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – Rigoletto (Milnes/Sills/Kraus)

 front-small-boxset
Although my personal favourite – and IHMO best version on earth – the Sutherland/Pavarotti/Milnes recording from 1973 is, this Rigoletto is absolutely wonderful. Rudel conducted firmly but not magnificently, but the cast is magnificent. Milnes (also the title role in the Rigoletto with Sutherland and Pavarotti) is the best ever, no doubt. Always touching and powerful, his acting is amazing and his screams of “Gilda! Mia Gilda! Ah, la maledizione!” are unrivalled. Without any doubt, Milnes is one of the greatest baritones ever been on earth

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – Requiem (Giulini)

front_small_boxsetEven though the corruption of the Heirarchy, mainly about power, put him off the Church, and made it difficult for him to believe, Verdi expresses here his faith, or longing for faith. The Giulini recording of Verdi’s “Requiem” has long been a favorite of many listeners, both for the conducting and the quality of the soloists, most of whom were at the peak of their careers.
