HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Francis Poulenc – La Musique De Chambre (Fournier, Le Quintette À Vent De Paris, Menuhin)

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this marvellous set
Francis Poulenc had throughout his life a predilection for wind instruments. He composed for the winds at the very beginning (sonata for 2 clarinets) at the very end of his career (sonatas for clarinet and piano, for oboe and piano). But this did not prevent him from producing during the Second World War two magnificent sonatas for violin and piano and cello and piano (each dedicated to Ginette Neveu and Pierre Fournier). His music

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca Eclipse) Haydn, Boccherini, Vivaldi – Cello Concerti (Fournier)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to Jean-Luc for these little pearls
Paris-born Pierre Fournier (1906-1986) was the leading French cellist of his time, renowned for his elegant playing of the standard repertoire and for his ties to such contemporary composers as Roussel, Schoeck, Martinon, Martin, Poulenc, and others whose works were dedicated to him or which he premiered. Fournier’s recordings include the major solo works and concertos, along with important chamber music pieces in which he was partnered by such artists as Schnabel and Kempff, among others.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Ludwig van Beethoven – Complete Works For Cello And Piano (Fournier/Kempff)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to Jean-Luc for these beautiful 1st pressings
I have been listening to this box-set intensely during ripping and my admiration for Kempff–already considerable–has grown in leaps and bounds. So too has my regard for Pierre Fournier, whose playing on this recordings is bold and clearly articulated. Kempff is the most humane and visionary of pianists, and he is remarkable in that he is perfectly prepared to put his undoubted virtuosity on the back burner and let Fournier’s cello fully sing and soar. I have noticed on other recordings of cello sonatas (the Kovacevich/Du Pre coupling of Beethoven’s 3rd and 5th and the Ax/Ma Brahms for example) that the cello is often overwhelmed. This is definitely not the case here, where the projection of both instuments seems perfectly in balance, and if anything favors the cello. When it first arrived I was a little dismayed to see that these were listed as “Live Recordings,” since I am not really a fan of this sub-genre–they usually end up having none of the spontaneity and energy of the concert arena while maintaining all the little annoyances (audience shuffling/flubbed notes). This recording however, is perfect for these pieces. The sound is spacious and you come away with the impression that these musicians are playing just for you in a rather large room.

Super HD-Vinyl 24/192 (DGG) Saint-Saens/Lalo/Bruch – Cello Concertos (Fournier)

front-small-boxsetPierre Fournier is an incredible cellist and these performances of the concertos by Saint-Saens and Lalo are magical. Another added bonus to this recording is the inclusion of Bruch’s “Kol Nidrei for Cello and Orchestra”.
Lalo’s concerto is not among my favorite ones, but Fournier is the only cellist who motivates me to listen it. That’s why I recommend you. Because somehow, this Op. seems to have been composed for this memorable artist.
