HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Mussorgsky//Rimsky-Korsakov/Borodin – Pictures At An Exhibition/Capriccio Espagnole/Polovetsian Dances (Muti/Roshdestwensky)

front-small-boxset
You can always count on Riccardo Muti to give a strong performance of popular works. His performance of Mussorgsky’s masterpiece is near the top. His tempi for the various “pictures” are right on. Muti’s performance is excellent and he has the sound to carry it off, but the reading does lack the oomph of others like Reiner and especially Ormandy (the earlier recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra on Columbia/Sony). Muti begins Pictures as though he is warming up, with the latter pictures much more highly charged than those in the first half. By the time he arrives at The Great Gate of Kiev he and the Philadelphia Orchestra are in full swing. It’s a top-notch performance.
Gennady Rozhdestvensky’s recordings of the “Polovetsian Dances” by Borodin and The “Capriccio Espagnole” by Rimsky-Korsakov are powerful and impeccable interpretations and good companions to Mussorgsky’s “pictures”.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Peter Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 5 In E Minor (Muti)

front-small-boxset
Composed in 1888 the Fifth Symphony is generally considered to be the most attractive of Tchaikovsky’s major works. When he first began writing the symphony he was suffering from a deep depression. However, he moved to the countryside and his state of mind became much more relaxed, enjoying the peace and quiet, gaining a new-found pleasure from his garden. This E minor Symphony reflects all the violent and conflicting emotions that he was experiencing at the time of its composition.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Giuseppe Verdi – Aida (Caballé, Domingo, Muti)

front-small-boxset All thanks for this beauty go to my generous donator from Lake Michigan area
Behind the pyramids and the elephants, the long lines of prisoners of war and of slaves carrying booty, the choral shouts of “Glory to Egypt,” and the splendid brass sounding the Triumphal March, Aida is the story of a love triangle: Aida, an Ethiopian princess who has become a slave in Egypt; Amneris, an Egyptian princess; and Radamès, the Egyptian general they both love (Aida secretly). There are ironies and conflicts: How can she love a man who is the enemy of her country, but who says he has fought and conquered for the sake of her love? It is suitable only for the biggest opera houses and therefore demands voices capable of great power as well as emotional expressiveness. Montserrat Caballé, Plácido Domingo, and Fiorenza Cossotto provide such voices, and Ricardo Muti conducts with a sense of drama and dynastic glory. –Joe McLellan

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – La Traviata (Scotto, Kraus, Bruson, Muti)

front-small-boxsetMany many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this precious gift
What Muti does in the party scene in the 1st act is unbelievable. His fast tempos fits extremely well. Scotto’s voice is, of course, quite different from Votto’s recording. I am very found of Scotto’s freshness on that recording. She went through this highly difficult score with an apparent easiness that is admirable. On this recording, she is more dense (her tone reminds me Cortubas or maybe it is vice-versa). Nevertheless, it is a wonderful accomplishment. Kraus sounds very similar as his Duke in the Rigoletto recording with Beverly Sills. Incredible fresh voice for his age. Bruson is okay. That duet on the second act is so beautiful that it is very hard to mess up.
Brand new box&vinyls, played here for the very 1st time.
