HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Decca) Richard Strauss – Elektra (Nilsson, Resnik, Solti)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to Trottar for his generosity
If ever there was a dysfunctional family, it was the one in this opera, based on a Greek tragedy but deeply imbued with the ideas of Sigmund Freud. The mother Clytemnestra (mezzo-soprano Regina Resnik) and her lover Aegisthus (tenor Gerhard Stolze) have murdered the father, Agamemnon, on his triumphant return from the Trojan War. They have an excuse: Agamemnon gave his daughter Iphigenia for a human sacrifice. Another daughter, Elektra (soprano Birgit Nilsson), burns for revenge, but as a woman in a patriarchal society, she must use her brother Orestes (baritone Tom Krause) to execute her plan. Nilsson’s portrayal is a high point of her career, and the whole brilliant production matches her performance. This is not easy listening, but it puts us in touch with dark realities dangerous to ignore, and the music (after you get used to it, which may take a while) has great power. –Joe McLellan

HD-Vinyls(Mono) 24/96 (RCA) Richard Strauss – Elektra (Highlights) (Inge Borkh, Fritz Reiner)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Jean-Luc for the vinyl
Fritz Reiner’s fabled 1956 excerpts from Strauss’s Elektra not only live up to their legend via RCA’s superb “Living Stereo” remastering, but attest to the conductor’s unmatched synchronicity between his orchestra and, arguably, the most commanding, involved rendering of the title role and Orestes on disc. Inge Borkh’s powerful, laserlike timbre and intense vocal acting are beyond praise in the touching Recognition Scene.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Richard Strauss – Die Frau Ohne Schatten (Böhm)

front-small-boxsetThis pearl is brought to you by Jean-Luc
Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal began their collaboration on Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow) with utopian ambitions. Unfortunately they weren’t the same ones. For Hofmannsthal, this would finally be the opera where his poetry would be illuminated by rather than buried under the music. For Strauss, this was to be his magnum opus, the self-proclaimed “last Romantic opera” that would cement his place in musical history. The gargantuan work that finally emerged after World War I for a 1919 premiere didn’t end up being quite what they expected, and was lengthy and demanding enormous orchestral and vocal force, even by Straussian standards…..

Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Mercury) Richard Strauss – “Rosenkavalier”-Suite/Till Eulenspiegen (Dorati)

front-small-boxsetThousand thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
In this one superlative disk you can hear why Dorati was considered one of Strauss’s greatest interpreters. Throughout his career, from the days of the Ballet Russe in the ’30s and ’40s to the Detroit Symphony recordings of the ’70s and ’80s, Dorati followed Strauss scholarship closely and shared his admiration of Strauss with audiences in stunning and communicative performances. These are from his Minneapolis years and the performances are knockouts. The maestro plays fair by the composer, but there’s an almost operatic type of scene organization that allows him to build drama and lead us through the ebbs and tides of Straussian psychology.
