HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Hector Berlioz – Romeo Et Juliette (Colin Davis)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks Trottar for this rarity
After much searching for the Romeo et Juliette of my dreams, I ended up back here, with the very first recording of this piece I owned, along with much of the rest of the original Colin Davis Berlioz cycle. While other recordings have in my mind and ear superceded much of the Davis survey (excepting the colossal Les Troyens, and the Te Deum), this recording holds my attention just as it did 45 years ago. The London Symphony Orchestra was at a peak of performance and sound back in the late sixties, and here Davis has them in complete control. The choir is the estimable John Alldis Choir, and for me are the best of the best on this recording. The soloists are uniformly first class British singers from the era, and a special kudo to Robert Tear for sounding so French! In sum, there are other admirable recordings of this work, but for me this is the best, the definitive one.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Giacomo Puccini – Manon Lescaut (Caballé/Domingo)

Many thanks to our friend from Lake Michigan.
Puccini’s Manon Lescaut is an Italian lyric tragedy drama. The opera is centered on Manon Lescaut (Montserrat Caballé), a beautiful young girl about to be sent to a convent. When Chevalier Des Grieux (Placido Domingo) sees her the flame of passion between them is ignited. Manon’s life is a winding one: seduced by riches that ultimately trigger her downfall but ultimately finding redemption in Des Grieux’s love for her. Conductor Bruno Bartoletti leads the New Philharmonia Orchestra as they traverse Puccini’s gorgeous melodies that permeate the opera, from Manon’s poignant arias to the lush orchestral score.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Ludwig van Beethoven – Missa Solemnis (Sir Colin Davis)

Many thanks to a special guy from the Michigan Lake for this vinyl-donation
This performance of the Missa Solemnis Op. 123 is inspired, rich of sensitiveness, deep, well balanced, but vivid and not obvious. Colin Davis smoothly matches the global vision and the richness of details.
R.I.P. well, Maestro!
