This is in my eyes (and ears) one of the few cases where the MFSL version is devasting better than the original.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – Falstaff (Gobbi/Karajan)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this legend belong to our friend Trottar
This Karajan Falstaff has much to recommend it: Fedora Barbieri’s Mistress Quickly is a force of nature, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, only slightly affected, is a liquid, appealing Alice Ford, and Luigi Alva and the young Anna Moffo are ideal as the young lovers, Fenton and Nanetta. But the star–as it should be–is Tito Gobbi in the title role. As is usual with this great singing actor, his characterization comes from within–his is a Falstaff born to be deflated, arrogant and self-deluding on a level that is actually funny. And the nice surprise is what good voice Gobbi’s in–he’s in charge of all of his vocal colors here and he uses all of them well. Karajan’s touch is light and, yes, funny, and he treats the opera as the divine ensemble work it is, all leading up to a superb final scene. A good time is had by all–listeners included. –Robert Levine.

HD-Vinyl(Mono) 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Mascagni – Cavalleria Rusticana/Leoncavallo – I Pagliacci (Callas, Di Stefano, Gobbi, Serafin)

front-small-boxsetHad to search for a long long time, to get a NM copy of this
Leoncavallo’s and Mascagni’s short operas belong among the most popular works of the verismo . A great example of love, disappointment, betrayal, and death. Mascagni s beautiful music was made popular among opera novices through the Hollywood masterpiece “The Godfather III” . Leoncavallo’s sad and touching aria of Canio “Recitar, mentre preso dal delirio…” is one of the most beautiful arias in operatics. On this set, Maria Callas, Tito Gobbi and Giuseppe Di Stefano, led by Tullio Serafin, deliver a breathtaking performance. Stunning!

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giacomo Puccini – Madama Butterfly (Scotto/Bergonzi/Barbirolli)

Maybe you know, my friends, that I’m not a fan of Mrs Scotto. But, hell, I must admit, she’s here totally into the role of the unhappy Cio-Cio-San, that she has touched me…Glad to have heard her on this beautiful set, that I only bought because of Bergonzi. I have never been so moved. I have some fine recordings of Butterfly — Tebaldi, Freni, Price — yet none have moved me as this one. They all have their fine points, and moving parts that bring one to tears, but this recording is so much more than the occasional fine moment. After I heard this opera twice in a row, I’m convinced, that this is the best “Butterfly” in the milky way.
