Mono HD-Vinyls 24/96 (RCA) The Horowitz Collection

Many thanks to Trottar for This historical document
Historical recordings from (I guess) the 40s/50s.
This box contains much of the best of Horowitz’s playing. He is at the top of his ability, and the recordings are just superb, not to mention the incredibly eclectic choice of works that he plays on this. It’s worth it just to hear him play the Chopin Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise!

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (EMI) Sergei Prokofiev – Alexander Nevsky (Previn)

Thank you Jean-Luc for this gem

Captured in 32 bit/384 kHz
Film director Sergei Eisenstein was not deceived by Hitler’s ruse and saw the Nazi threat for what it was, a black faced lie, not to invade Russia. He brought out a film called Alexander Nevsky in 1938, telling of the 13th Century Russian hero, Prince Alexander and his campaign against the invading Teutonic Knights of Germany. The story, quite accurate at that, was a good parallel with the situation in 1938, and served as a slightly disguised warning to the Soviet people to be ready, when the Germans invaded Russia. Eisenstein was sure this was a certainty, despite Stalin’s insistance that the Führer could be trusted. So disillusioned was the Soviet leader when the German Army did attack, that he sequestered himself for 2-3 weeks in his Moscow area “dacha,” a sort of Communist “Camp David.” He refused to give defensive orders and hundreds of thousands of Soviets died in the initial days of this war. Stalin, at first, tried to suppress the Eisenstein film, but it was so popular that he relented…..

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Supraphon) Prokofieff – Symphony-Concerto/Respighi – Adagio Con Variazioni (Ancerl/Navarra)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this rarity go to Jean-Luc
Though the Symphony-Concerto is cast in the conventional three movements, their proportions are unusual: the outer movements are equal in duration, while the central movement is a vast, complex Scherzo replete with wild ideas and a thrilling extended cadenza. The work begins with a relatively slow movement that proceeds with the character of a march, propelled by an ascending four-note theme. The solo cellist…

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Melodyia) Sergei Prokofiev – The Jester (Rozhdestvensky)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this masterwork go to Jean-Luc

Receiving a commission from the Ballets Russes impresario extraordinaire Serge Diaghilev (1872-1929) Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) began work on the score of “Chout” in Italy in 1915. It had been decided to write the ballet based upon a Russian folk tale. Based in Paris since 1909 the Ballets Russes had achieved a formidable reputation for innovation and the superior quality of it’s productions. Two humorous tales of the Perm province had been discovered in the Russian tales collection of A. Afanasiev. These made up the basis for the ballet libretto. The long awaited premier of “Chout” opened the Ballets Russes season on May 17, 1921 in the…..

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Melodiya/Columbia) Sergei Prokofiev – The Stone Flower (Rozhdestvensky)

front-small-boxset
The Stone Flower ballet is contemporaneous with the opera The Story of a Real Man. It was his last ballet and as you can see from the timings is on an ambitious scale inviting comparison with Cinderella and Romeo and Juliet. The year was 1948. Prokofiev had put aside thoughts of setting Pushkin’s The Stone Guest in favour of a subject with nationalist resonance. Folk material was required by the invitation of Zhdanov’s ‘spirit of the times’; an invitation not to be denied. The hero of the ballet is the artist Danilo. His ‘grail’ is the stone flower hidden somewhere in the caverns of the Copper Mountain. He needs it as the raw material for a malachite vase. The supernatural Mistress of the Copper Mountain guards the flower. Danilo finds it but is enchanted by the Mistress. Katerina rescues Danilo and the flower is won. The villainous bailiff, Severyan, is consigned to the earth

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Chandos) Sergei Prokofiev – Two Violin Concerti (Mordkovitch/Järvi)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Jean-Luc for this rarity
Sergei Prokofiev wrote only two violin concertos, and while they are works of more angst than the more musical concertos of a Tchaikovsky or Beethoven or of course Mozart, they are still accessible and worth exploring.
The sound of this record is very good.
