HD-Vinyl 24/96 (RCA) Rachmaninov – Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini – Liszt, Piano Concerto No. 2 (Van Cliburn)

Many thanks to Janicius for this gift
Recognition in Moscow propelled Cliburn to international prominence. The first International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958 was an event designed to demonstrate Soviet cultural superiority during the Cold War, after the USSR’s technological victory with the Sputnik launch in October 1957. Cliburn’s performance at the competition finale of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 on April 13 earned him a standing ovation lasting eight minutes. When it was time to announce the winner, the judges were obliged to ask permission of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to give first prize to an American. “Is he the best?” Khrushchev asked. “Then give him the prize!” Cliburn returned home to a ticker-tape parade in New York City, the only time the honor has been accorded a classical musician. HD-Vinyl 24/96 (RCA) Sergei Rachmaninov – Piaco Concerto No. 3 (Cliburn/Kondrashin)

Many thanks to Janicius for this gift
This recording is special. Its a living historical document that formed the basis of legend. The circumstances surrounding this competition, its occurrence in a specific time and place, and the outcomes, all are noteworthy. Like most historical documents, this one isn’t perfect. Nonetheless, the sound is quiet good. To be sure, the orchestra still sounds thin at times, intonation isn’t always the best. And Van Cliburn is hardly note-perfect either. But the performance is just electrifying, and the excitement, palpable. Van Cliburn delivers. But in the end one can really be blown away by the power and passion Van Cliburn put into the Rach 3…unbelievable for a 24 year old.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (RCA) Grieg – Piano Concerto – Liszt – Piano Concerto No. 1 (Cliburn/Ormandy)

Many thanks to Janicius for this gift
Van Cliburn’s recordings of the Tchaikovsky First and Rachmaninoff Second Piano Concertos are legendary, but his performances of some of the other famous Romantic Concertos often get overlooked. These recordings of the Grieg and the 1st of Liszt Concerti by Cliburn, and conductor Eugene Ormandy leading the Philadelphia Orchestra, are outstanding. Van Cliburn is at his best on these Concerti, particularly on the Grieg, as he melds his “heart-on-sleeve” style with commanding technique and phrasing. Some may not like this style of playing, and sometimes it does not suit a particular piece (his Brahms First comes to mind), but here there is no question.
