HD-Vinyl 24/96 (CBS) JSB – The Brandenburg Concerts (Walter/Wendy Carlos – Switched On Brandenburgs)

front-small-boxset
No less than Glenn Gould proclaimed, “Carlos’s realization of the Fourth Brandenburg Concerto is, to put it bluntly, the finest performance of any of the Brandenburgs–live, canned, or intuited–I’ve ever heard.”
This is a collection of all six of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos performed by
Wendy(Walter)Carlos on her Moog modular synthesizer. Concertos 1, 2, and 6 were recorded specifically for this album. Concertos 3, 4, and 5 had been previously released on Switched-On Bach, The Well-Tempered Synthesizer, and Switched-On Bach II respectively. The first movement of the Second Concerto had been recorded for the album By Request, released in 1975.
The Back-cover has a mis-print: The last Concerto is listed twice.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (CBS) Wendy (Walter) Carlos – The Well-Tempered Synthesizer

well
If you have to own one of her early recordings, this is the one to get. The haunting final Monteverdi piece, with its strange, beautiful, and terrifying electronic vocals is worth the price of admission alone. Perhaps the crown work on this album is Bach’s 4th Brandenburg Concerto, which Glenn Gould once called the most perfect interpretation.

Any discussion that gets hung up on the instrumentation of this record misses that, here, Carlos gets the feeling of Bach’s music nailed, track after track. This is a player on a mission. Note how the material is cleverly sequenced for maximum liveliness and variety…
