“I am delighted to have my work included in the collection of The 100 Greatest Recordings of All Time which The Franklin Mint Record Society has so marvelously assembled for lovers of fine music.

The collection itself is an inspiration, in my opinion. I am especially pleased that the advisory panel has seen fit to choose the particular recordings of my work which they did. The Liszt, the Chopin, the Rachmaninoff and the Schumann pieces are all personal favorites of mine. In addition, I consider these recordings to be among the most important in which I have ever participated.

It is my hope that they will bring you much pleasure, and that they will enrich your appreciation of great piano music and the composers who brought their genius to its creation.”
Vladimir Horowitz, from a letter included in this volume

From the booklet:

Robert Schumann – The range of Robert Schumann’s creative abilities could hardly be better illustrated than in this coupling of Kinderszenen and Kreisleriana, or in the performance of them by Vladimir Horowitz. In the first instance are the charm and diversity of the pieces written in memory of his own childhood. They include such a simple example of masterful music as Träumerei (“Dreaming”). On the other hand is Kreisleriana, the brilliantly fanciful embodiment of Schumann’s rank as a musical master of literary subject matter. In both respects it is the legendary capacity of such a pianistic titan as Vladimir Horowitz which brings this music alive in all its imagery and pictorial brilliance.

Frédéric Chopin – Whether is his long works or in his brief masterpieces, Chopin is the essential composer for the piano, the man whose understanding of the possibilities in the instrument not only excelled that of any contemporary. but projected unsuspected resources for the future in the keys and pedals, the strings and hammers of the basic instrument. This means that as the piano itself has developed over the decades, Chopin’s greatest works have acquired a grandeur of sound and color that they did not possess even for their creator. Such a work as the B-flat Minor Sonata, with it’s world-celebrated “Funeral March” has, as herein performed by Horowitz, a richness of imagery and a wealth of detail uniquely its own.

Franz Liszt – From his birth in Hungary, and his remarkable emergence as a prodigy who even won the praise of Beethoven himself, Liszt brought elements into music it had never known before. Outstanding in the surge of natural fervor that changed music forever in the nineteenth century was the kind of supercharged, individual character that Liszt imparted to his Rhapsodies. In this version of No. 19, Horowitz performs his own interpretation with its dramatic embellishments.

Sergei Rachmaninoff – Few personalities of the concert stage in this century have so typified the grand manner and musical power of the past as did Sergei Rachmaninoff. He was idolized by the audiences of his time both as pianist and composer. The special brand of Russian emotionalism that characterizes his works finds its predestined interpreter in such a Kiev-born artist as Horowitz, who responds to them in all their brooding colorations.

  1. hi, beautiful collection, but the first part of the 1644 set seems to be corrupted or has a different password (as downloaded from filefactory).
