A Paradise of Baroque Lyricism

Bonporti (1672-1749) was an Italian priest/composer with superlative musical training in the violin. It’s likely that he studied under the legendary Corelli, for there is certainly a Corellian feel to these beautifully wrought little inventioni. With all the baroque and early music albums that I have bought over the past several years, there are only a small handful that I would want to take with me to that proverbial desert island. Trevor Pinnock’s Corelli Concerti Grossi is certainly one. This album is another. I don’t think I will ever tire of hearing Chiara Banchini play these inventive and lyrical little pieces. There is great melodic charm scattered abundantly throughout both discs. Banchini of course plays baroque violin, and plays with great finesse. If you have a penchant for Italian baroque, then you really cannot afford to pass up Bonporti.

  1. For me, this is the best music the baroque era did give us.
It is still my best classical CD.

Bonporti, in his Opus X (only here),
did much, much better than Bach and mosters of the sort.
Acrtually, Bach manually copied these works,
but he never attained the imagination,
the incredibly variegated harmonies or the lyricism
these invenzioni encompass. It’s unbelievable music, truly.

The performance, on top of it,
would likely be never quite approached.

    This set is compulsory.
Meaning, don’t die before listening to it.

I’m being completely serious here.

  2. Thanks whatever, I enjoyed this enormously. I’m sure he’s well know to the music buffs, but I’d never heard of Bonporti before. What a terrible shame.

I should say, as much as I like the “big” boxset releases (complete editions and so on), I think it’s these single albums that give me the most joy. Keep up the good work Tzar Whatever!
