Well known for his interpretations of the works of Frederic Chopin and Serge Rachmaninov, appearing on concert platforms the world over, the great Argentinian pianist Nelson Goerner is joining the Zig-Zag Territoires label. Obviously, from the performer of these pieces – of all the pieces on this [album] – one will expect mastery and sensitivity. But even more is necessary: gifts of a colourist; an imagination of the settings; a vision of the sound planes and space. And also, for these pieces that are heirs to and the summary of such a glorious tradition, it also calls for broad knowledge and culture of the piano repertoire. The performer of the Etudes stands at the arrival of an itinerary, that of the keyboard “”en blanc et noir””. He must know everything and play almost everything. Nelson Goerner is that performer. (Dominique Jameux) Nelson Goerner is not only a world renowned soloist, he has performed with many of todays major orchestras including the London Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra. A keen chamber musician, he has also collaborated with artists such as Martha Argerich, Janine Jansen, and Gary Hoffman.

I am extremely picky about my Chopin pianist. When Don Vroon of the American Record Guide told me that Goerner was now his favorite Chopin pianist, I ordered the Nocturnes, and indeed they were fabulous. Several world class pianists do not cut the mustard with me re Chopin – Arherich, Richter. Yundi Li is excellent but Goerner surpasses him. So if his Chopin playing was that good, let’s buy his Debussy album and see.

Many years ago when I went to a recital by Arthur Rubenstein, intermission came and I realized that my back had not hit the chair since he started playing – it was just so hypnotic, as is the case here. This planing is just fabulous – nuanced, hypnotic. I will be buying anything he plays if I like the music. You will not be disappointed, to say the very least. Mr. Goerner, if you are reading this, please take care of your health and consider wowing me again with Ravel and/or more Debussy. I did not believe that anyone could equal much less surpass Uchida re the etudes. Congratulations!
